I recently had to buy a new pc, my old pc win ME, really basic. but the hard drive crashed. Ive been told I can install the old hard drive into the new pc and use windows explorer to copy any old pics etc ...
I opened the casing and put the old hard drive in the slot beside the new one, but the connections on the older hard drive is smaller than the new one. How can I get around this ?

Old HD: 20GB AT Fireball ict
    New HD: 220GB WDC (?)

Hope somebody can help. I can show pics to explain ... Cheers. GBX:cool:

Is the new HDD SATA or IDE?

(like is the connector a small wire thing or a big ribbon yoke)

Your motherboard no doubt has an IDE port or two (your 320GB HDD is SATA)

Get an IDE cable (one of the ribbon thingies) and plug the HDD into that. Make sure you set the second hard drive to slave (there should be a little jumper thingy on the back of the drive beside the ribbon connection connecting two of the pins. Hopefully there's a little diagram over them cos I can't remember how you have to move the jumper thingy.)

If you still have your old PC take the connector cable that was on the HDD and use that.

A photo of your MOBO (or the model number) would be handy cos I could possibly show you where to plug it in

Not sure if this will work ..

It works yeh but a photo of the motherboard would be handier cos that'd show where to plug it in.

I think that's already set as slave

You do not have to set the 2nd hard drive to slave, seeing that IDE has no connections with SATA. You can set it as MASTER/SLAVE, and connect it on any connector on the IDE cable.

If it was the hard disk crashing that caused you to need a new PC, there's a good chance it won't work in the new one. 'Crashing' is a bit of a vague term, do you know anything more about what was wrong with it, in particular if it was a physical problem with the disk itself, or a problem with windows or other data stored on it ?

Any chance you could take a clearer pic of the old hard drive sitting on top of the new hard drive, connectors empty. From the connectors end.

IDE hard drive looks like its set to cable select to me.... might be wrong. It'll still work anyway. You need to get yourself an IDE cable and link it up. As previously said, if it was previously crashing, you may not be able to recover data, but it may have been other files that just got corrupted, so you might be ok.
