a mouse is like a beer, everyone has their preference.

if you're really serious about gaming, stay away from wireless, i don't care what anyone says you can't beat a wired mouse for gaming.

maybe they've totally sorted the laggyness of them recently but the sheer weight of them with batteries inside make it a no no.

you're just going have to get out there and try different mice, go to a mates house, shops anywhere that has a different mouse than yours.

in my opinion you can't go wrong with these

MS intellimouse 1.1 (can still be found)
MS intellimouse 1.1Special Edition (this is what i use, but is very very hard to find )
MS intellimouse Explorer 3.0 (this is what i used before the 1.1SE, these are discontinued but can still be found on ebay and the likes).

as you can see all the mice i suggested are microsoft, now i'm not anti logitech/razer/insert other brand here but microsoft mice fit my hand like a glove.

also i suggest for gaming have a look at getting a seriously good mouse mat, one of the selling points of optical mice were that they didn't need a mouse mat, that is so wrong especially for gaming (it may be true for general office work but not for gaming).

check out www.func.net , www.steelpad.com for mouse mats.

having used the steelpad S&S and the func1030 i have stuck with the func1030 as it's the same material as the S&S but has a smooth and rough side, aswell as a mouse clip to give you free movement of the mouse.

    anymore questions ask away.

I use logitech cos I find them more sturdy and bulkier so i can get a better grip.
In to PC world you go - they have them all out and lined up for you to try them.

I'm a logitech fan too. I was looking at upgrading to a MX 518 or a G5 or G7 myself. never used wireless for gaming. Would like to try it though.

Ditto. I like it coz its nice and big so it fits snugly in the palm of your hand rather than just on the end of your fingers like a normal one. Plus laser really is noticably more accurate than optical.

    Razer or Logitech mice.

They both have the same engines, phillips(laser or optical)

It's just up to your preference in shape.

Cremo started off so well then suggested Intellimouse

Logitech MX510 or MX518 are both fantastic gaming mice.

[edit]should have stated that I use the 510 myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

well the older versions are 10 times better than what they have now,

also you missed the part saying that a mouse is a preference. :p as they really are

halfwy down has the mx510 plus steel pad ffor 30 euro. i thought it was reasonqble value

Logitech MX-510 here... and i pwnz Jo a11!

I've never found a problem with optical, and i wouldn't go back to wheel, but i did have a problem with a wireless set of mse & kbd for gaming. It was weird if i was strafing back and left/right and jumping and firing then it would ignore one of the keys i was pressing. It just couldn't take all the input.

i'd definitly recommend logitechs wired mice, from the mx500 upwards, so i reckon the g5 would be the one to go for

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,264 ✭✭✭✭Hobbes

I would recommend any Logitech optical mouse that uses cable (wireless is a pain). If your a hardcore gamer you want to be going for a mouse with a lot of buttons and extremely high DPI. I think Logitech have one that goes to 1600dpi.

personally I never use a mouse now that doesn't have 4 mouse buttons and wheel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,320 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

the logitech g5/g7 are the current top Logitech mice, both being 2000dpi.

The razer copperhead is comparable (exact same laser/tracker), and offers a different shape.

The latest Microsoft Mice aren't great i.e. the 6000. The explorer 3.0 was probably the best they produced, and as said, is now discontinued.

It really is something that people have a personal preference for, AND generally people will always like their original, so my recommendation would be to go out and buy the newest best one there is, cos in 2 years time you'll probably be talking about how it "pwns" the new ones that come out.

Using a G7 myself, great mouse. Being able to switch DPI on the fly is great for FPS games, leave it at 2000 for quick reactions, switch down to 800 for more accuracy or even 400 for sniping (you can customise the values but these work fine for me). The weight isn't a problem, altough the bettery only lasts a few days, but it does come with 2 so you can have one in the charger. The 2.6ghz wireless tech eliminates the lag and interferences problems of earlier wireless mice, and whatever trickery they used to increase the reporting speed of the USB port works great, allowing you to truly use the higher DPI settings without it skipping. It's truly a king among mice, the only downside is the price, unless you really want wireless the G5 would be better.

just make sure and get mouse with 6 buttons ,4 at side ,can be assigned for any function in games ,eg reload ,zoom etc, unique assignments for each program u use or even for web search, back, forward,,etc.i got nice 1 in peats get standard shape, not to big like ms intellimouse,3 buttons is no use for a mouse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

i find three buttons is fine for a mouse. i have four on mine (1.1 Special Edition) and tbh i only use three of them,

    mouse1 fire
    mouse2 alt. fire
    mouse3 last weapon switch

the above is regards to cs, but can stay the same for any other game.

just make sure you're happy with the mouse once your happy then nothing else matters.

Well 3 buttons is enough for you cause looks like you play CS mainly

I though, play CoD, and 5 buttons is hardly enough for me.

    mouse1 - fire
    mouse2 - ironsight
    mouse3 - bash/breathhold
    mouse4 - switch weapon
    mouse5 - frag granade
    scroll up - sensitivity up
    scroll down - sensitivity down

oh and btw, the mouse is Logitech MX310, I don't really care about the engine or sensitivity, 800dpi works just fine for me, tried Razer and Logitech 5 series, but they were all just too bulky, after couple of hours, I put them all away and returned to my sweet little MX310 :) plus there is a "rumor" that MX310's G3 version will come out soon, and that one will have a MX510's engine.

There is already a G1 version of MX300

Just ordered a G5 - xmas pressie from the woman. Happy days.

Also ordered another 200GB hdd (goin raid) and a Logitech Gaming Keyboard - Anyone have/ever used one of these keyboards?

    Any good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

i don't know about that much about keyboards as they don't hinder your aim unless you don't use a mouse to aim.

so i just use an apple keyboard normally the plainer the keyboard the better.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 18,115 ✭✭✭✭ShiverinEskimo

comfort factor for a keyboard is important - most cramps occur in the kyboard hand after extended hours because the knuckles do all the work and not the arm. I know using the fancy logitech diNovo media desktop keybaord is sweet cos the buttons are like a laptop. Soft and very little travel in them to be pressed - unfortunately the mouse just isn't up to scratch for online gaming - it was grand for single player but a bit jumpy for online...so i'm changing it out.

Will be selling the diNovo soon now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,227 ✭✭✭gamer

as a serious gamer who likes fps i like to assign separate mouse buttons for sniper zoom, grenades, alt fire ,normal, fire,,so i need minimum mouse optical, with 5 buttons, and scroll wheel, cos in the middle of a firefight i dont wanna be looking for keyboard buttons, its much easier to assign mouse buttons for games like ut 2004.it makes it easier faster to change weapons without think what keyboard button do i press now.

Was reading this thread today and couldn't stop myself running out to Peats to buy the Logitech MX518 mouse and G15 keyboard. Two perfectly good excuses for suxxoring at UT2K4 now ruined :)

Cost 150 euro for the both in Peats but blagged myself a 10% discount by pretending that IT Direct had em cheaper. Komplett would've been cheaper again but they're out of stock til next month and I'm the impatient sort

Do people still go to Peats? An MX518 cost <€50 EUR online. Why go to Peats??? €150 EUR... OMG...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 232 ✭✭fullerand

That's 150 euro for the mouse and the keyboard mate.

Cheapest online price for the mx518 was 47 euro in komplett, plus 10 euro for delivery = 57 euro plus a 3-5 day wait. I got it immediately for 63 euro in the Peats shop right beside where I work, where I could take it out of the pack before buying to make sure I liked the form.

So yeah, people still go to Peats.

I got it from OcUk for around €30 with a steelpad and you get new "feet" with the steel pad, Smoooooooootth:D :D

definitely recommend the logitech g5...the dpi settings are sweet especially if u snipe a lot...definitely gives you the edge in bf2..also the left and right scroll can be used as weapon assignments for games as well..very comfortable to use plus u can adjust the weights for it as well..
Also heard very good things bout the G7 (wireless) however some ppl have complained about the plastic finish saying it gets slippy with usage..
Razer copperhead is also a good mouse however there are serious ergonomic issues with it..
best thing to do is to go into a pc world...check out the different mice..see how they feel in your hand and then go home and order the one you like the most off the web..the G5 is €90 in PC World but only €57 in Komplett (G7 is only €70)..stay away from the MX1000 mouse, was never designed for gaming and thus has serious lag issues with it..

Man, I miss the days of roller-ball mice, never any problems (until the dirt catches up with them), optical wired mice are OK but can be unpredictable if you don't have a very good surface to put it on.

Everything I've heard about about optical wireless mice indicates that they're a disaster.

Moral of the story: go for the cheapest wired mouse you can get.

skipped everyones psot, a mouse isnt going to make you a better gaming, or make it much easier.

Stay away from wireless, not in anway made for gaming due to their slow react speeds and all too apparent "sticking"

Dont spend 50+ euro on those razor crap etc, they boast specs they dont actually have.

You want a basic mouse with 2 buttons and a wheel, cost you 10 euro for a microsoft one....

And spending lots of moeny n mouse mats is silly too, get preferably the kinda shiny topped ones, but thick and large.

Anyone who thinks my suggestions are whack and that they would own my noob ass with their almight steel pad mouse mat and razor mosue costing over 100 euro agianst my mouse and pad of 20 euro, then come onto a cs server we go.
