Does anyone know if you select just stereo English as your language (as opposed to DD 5.1 English or something), is it normal for DVDs to have a Pro Logic II signal encoded in those two channels? Or are you just getting plain old stereo without any possibility for surround?

Also, if you select DD 5.1 but tell your DVD player to downmix it to two channels, would your DVD player encode a DPL2 signal into the two channels?

afaik, if you select your player to output PCM it will still have a PL2 info in it.
id say the downstream just gets all the channels and outputs them to 2channels.
