    No surprise really....

    U2- $260million quid.

Irish rock band U2 had the top-grossing tour of 2005, according to an end-of-year chart compiled by US magazine Billboard.
More than three million people watched the band's sell-out 90-date Vertigo tour which grossed $260m (£146.6m).

U2's homecoming shows in Dublin in June grossed more than $21.1m (£11.8m) and attracted nearly 247,000 fans.

The chart, which will be published in the magazine's next issue, also features The Eagles and Neil Diamond.

    Top ten

The Eagles, who formed in 1972, took $117m (£66m) from 77 shows in 2005, while Diamond grossed more than $71m (£40m).

Country star Kenny Chesney was fourth with a gross of $63m (£35.5m), More than 1.1 million people watched his shows - a figure second only to U2's.

The top 10 touring grosses were rounded out by Paul McCartney with $60m (£33.8m), Rod Stewart with $49m (£27m), Elton John with $45.5m (£25.6m), Dave Matthews Band with $45m (£25.3m), Jimmy Buffett with $41m (£23m) and Green Day with $36.5m (£20.5m).

However, the chart does not include sales for the Rolling Stones who have just finished the US leg of their A Bigger Bang tour.

Figures for their tour are expected to be released when it is complete.

No surprise, really. I did an interview with some blokes in Nottingham recently and one of the guys said that U2 could have very well financed at least two countries in Africa from the money they made on their current tour.

I guess he is absolutely right.
