I also am a complete novice. I also like the pic.
Others that are more experienced may tell you it's crap.
The spin on the ground seems to be going in a different direction to the movement of the dog. Looks kinda odd.
    Certainly made me smile =0)

Hi J, im having major deja vu here lol. To be honest, ive just gone through a 3 page thread about people ( Person maybe:D ) calling my pic "Crap" and to "bin it" take my advice, its common sense too lol, You dont want the advice of someone who would say that in the firstplace, and you dont want your thread ruined by the arguements that will follow. Just imo leave it!!

    On topic...

I think the pic aint bad, its a good attempt at that kind of effect, and it does make your eye wander round the pic, which is a good thing id say. Of course, im a complete noob, but i dont think that disqualifies me from giving my 2 cents. Get yerself a decentish camera, it makes all the difference.

The first rule of sucessful photography is never let anyone see about 95% of the pictures you take.

If you don't think a shot is good enough for publication never ask for a second opinion on it. Your's is the one that counts. Bin it as soon as you have figured out what went wrong or how you could have improved it.

Only when you have a photo that you think is good enough do you show it to someone. Even then it might not be, but at least you will not have been embarassed by the ones that definitely weren't.

Become discerning in what you show, people will then think you only take good shots. Their appreciation of your good shots will build your confidence.

    That's my 2c worth.

i think that's very good advice.

when i first started to get into photography, a really good photographer told me that he expected to only get 1 or 2 passable shots from a roll of 36 (back in the days of film :)

The flip side of that is some people may love shots that you though were poor, Ive let a few people look through my pictures on my PC and a few have loved shots so much that they have printed/framed them and have them hanging in their houses, seeing them mounted and framed made all the difference. Now some of those shots are my fav's......

I aggree with this, but i would also add that there is no pleasing everybody. Concenus on a work of art is rare enough; it often boils down to personal taste... They may like, they may not.

But your own discrimination is key. Look at other photographers work. Try and identify what you like about pictures that catch your eye. Imagine how your work would stack up against them...

As i say thanks everone, i like the shot and that all i am happy about, i aint gonna be getting it enlarged and put on a billboard in my honor but i wont delete it, i took it with a dig camera worth 140 euro, just one i bought to photogragh houses i am viewing,i will be investing in a good camera in the new year but am currently strapped for cash with the new property, didnt wanna start a argument but its great that there are so many people out there with constructive critism ??

If i take anything else that will cause a stir me and my 140 euro cam will be there to pounce...

    Happy snapping all

People sure are negative here on this board...

I think the first photo is actually pretty interesting. The placement of the dog in the picture seems pretty on, and the green is uniform enough that I can see that image used to good effect in a magazine or something, you could put text down the side (though in that case you'd probably want a LITTLE more green on the right hand side). The splash is great, it looks kind of impressionistic but not in the way that you just applied a filter to the image.
I think the biggest thing I dont' like about this photo is that the dog's head is too blurry. You can see the curve of its back leg pretty clearly despite the blur and all, it'd be wonderful if you'd got something similar for the head. Though I suppose it's not exactly something you've got much control over at the time of shooting. =P

Second photo, yeah, the focus is off... it seems to be on the bench as opposed to the dog. It's not really a major problem for fixing. You just need to pick somewhere to focus on the dog, probably the eye's'd be the best part. Problem is, to get that kind of wide angle you have there, your digital camera may not be able to focus close enough, which is unavoidable. Only way to fix that would be to use a different camera/lens.
As far as composition in this photo, I'd like if we could see the entire left ear of the dog, if you want the dog to be the primary focus (ie taking up most of the frame). Also, the exact... focus point of the photo (not talking in blurry terms now, just as in what's the most important thing in the photo) isn't particularly clear. You've got this space above the dog's head which you could just get rid of, it detracts from the dog.

And well, about what Hagar said about not letting people see most of your photos... well, that's just if you want people to think you're great at photography. I wouldn't have a problem with showing people photos I didn't think are great, if I thought they could show me where I'd gone wrong. So what if they realise that not every photo I take is gold, at least I'm potentially furthering my skills.

In fact, it's almost worse to show people photos you think are great, because then they might go off and slate them entirely, and that's basically your best work shot down. Pretty disheartening. (That's not to say never show people anything. Obviously do, just be prepared. =P)

where you show your pics is important too. i find photosig.com quite good. you'll usually be told what's positive about your pic, and what would make it better. the critiques are rated as well as the pics so it's in their people's interest to make constructive criticisms... so no "binits" :)
