He was out the Delvin road in the Lakepoint area of the town,as far as I know his twin aerials blew down in a storm shortly after he put them up!

Ok so.. I'm not sure i ever noticed a double array in lakepoint, but will look next time I'm out there. Hope the loss of it didnt kill off his enthusiasm for all things RF.. :)

Anyway, I live out near rochfortbridge, and have a pace freeview box which somebody gave me. I've tried it out on a few occasions during tropo lifts and have had some good results.. channel 5 is usually a good indicator as to when the multiplexes will come in. I also tried it on a relations aerial on the hill near O' Meara's garden centre, and was able to receive it during normal conditions - he normally has a perfect signal from brougher.

Whereabouts are you in mullingar ..

I live in the centre of town, but when I lived in Delvin a few years back I had some deal of success in recieving from Brougher on a regular basis, the BBC Mux in particular if memory serves correctly......as always the best starting point is crystal clear analog channel and teletext reception

I'm sure you already know that Channel 5 isnt on Brougher, so is it possible that during that tropo a few weeks ago that was coming from Belfast? Or further?
I was able to get the Digital One mux on DAB in a upstairs room in Dublin 7 at that time. It would be easier to spot which BBC/ITV region would come in with tropo than radio.

I got voucher for a free double room in Hotel in Mullingar. I think it expired yesterday! Sadly it is a long drive from Limerick.

I camped there in 1978 or so and got eaten by midges. The Lake I suppose.

A few weeks ago signals from 500 miles or more were arriving like local. I was working a repater in DUNDEE, mobile radio in LIMERICK.

On VHF (not UHF) I can hear anything the Brougher Mountain direction before anything else DX wheen lift / Tropo conditions much at all. I think there might be a clear path mostly up the Shannon from Patrickswell , Nr Limerick.

    Hello all,

Well watty, you didnt miss much anyway with the voucher :) . Lucky for you you don't live near the bogs like we do, feckin midge's would ate ya. The tropo a few weeks back was the most excellent I have seen in a long time, with repeaters opening up other repeaters and absolute mayhem going on. I was up on the roof of the power station (almost 50 metres high) where i work with the scanner for a few hours - brilliant!. Hope to see more of that in the future. You probably would have a clear path up the shannon all right, which helps.
I know ch5 is not from brougher - but I have it even in the slightest lift, and most of the time i can just see it in the noise. My antenna system is due for an upgrade soon - i currently have only a kathrein antenna with a wideband amp on the mast (which works for Cairn hill and Brougher) feeding a distribution amp . I plan to put two cascaded grp A amps and diplexer up soon, along with two dipole's for bands 2 and 3 for FM and DAB dxing..

    Owen.
