Taxi's in Dublin over Christmas

Was talking to a bloke who said last Friday night 9th Dec, he waited 1 1/2 hours for a taxi at 3am in Dame Street/College Green area.
Heard from another couple that they had to stay in town all night as they couldn't get a taxi anywhere that night!
Anybody else having problems as I don't want to go into town on the lash and then find I can't get a taxi home?

On friday the ninth I was in town, my friends and I left at about 3 and picked up a taxi at some traffic lights,so no I didn't have a problem...that said there was a huge queue at the taxi rank...we weren't bothered to wait there so just started to walk in the direction of home and picked one up before we'd even walked for five minutes...anyway I wouldn't worry about it.If you really can't get a taxi home you can always use the night link!

Was in town recently in The Palace and afterwards had to walk from Camden Street to the Rathgar Road to get a taxi, and it was raining so I was not too happy about that.

It'll just get worse as it gets closer to Christmas but that said, the LUAS will be operating later (2.30/3am AFAIK) and there is always the nightlink.

AFAIK the night link runs late every night now until after new year. If you miss the last night at 4.30 then you can wait another hour or two till the ordinary bus serice starts in the morn but you should defo be able to get a taxi at that stage anyway.

got a tip from a taxi driver a few weeks ago and ive never had to wait more than 2 mins for a taxi since.
Walk to connolly station, face towards the oncoming traffic. All traffic coming back in from the northside has to go that road (amiens st), you'll pick up a taxi in a few minutes.

I've done that but the ****er wouldn't go Southside!
Needless to say I was to drunk to argue and got out

I can't understand why people stand at ranks on a weekend night

You will always pick one up if you start walking out of down.

I get the nightlink or luas only €4

I live on northside so connolly station is on my way home. Best thing to do is just keep walking towards your house facing the oncoming traffic, and eventually you'll get one. Sometimes I've to walk to fairview but I'd much rather that than to stand at a taxi rank with drunks starting fights. Why do people stand in those things at that hour? Fools...

Then he broke the law, you were entitled to report him. Once you're sitting in a taxi, the metre's on and you're not acting the bollix its upto you where you wanna go - be it Kimmage or Kerry

Id just like to add also that people should watch those "extras" on the right hand side on the metre over Xmas. The majority of taxi drivers are good but there's a few greedy phuckers out there. Ask to see the Fare Sheet if you've any doubts. If he hasnt got one, take his number and get out.

I thought it was now law that they had to provide you with a receipt, but know one seems to do it.

That's word for word what happened to me on the 9th. We probably walked past each other!

Taxi driver tried to rip me off last weekend. Put extras on the metre and said it was a pick up charge even though i hailed him on the street. I argued it with him and he took it off at the end so just be careful!

Not Kerry, he only has to take you to anywhere within the meter area which would be anywhere within Dublin.

Friday was the march in town wasnt it?
they probably all took the day off after.

Taxi driver a while back tried to charge me 14 quid from my apartment to Heusten, (€8 max), I questioned him and he just said "oh right, must be a problem with the metre" and took six - no point in not standing up for yourself!

I agree with this and have used it on a few occasions. Only problem is its a bit of a walk to Connolly Station from city centre

How could you have walked past eachother if you were going in the same direction?

Im not from Dublin but even ive sussed that. I usually stay with my aunt in Drumcondra or with a mate on Collins Avenue, so i start to head that way and keep an eye out for taxis coming back into the city. Standing at the taxi ranks is pretty lazy

    open door,

you : hi how much would it cost to go to drumcondra
    taxi driver : €10
you : (getting into back of cab and closing door) thats grand Im going there tomorrow i wanted to know, can you take me to (somewhere in the southside) please.

I thought taxis were not allowed to refuse a fare based on where it was going.

It must be going to somewhere in their metered area, no refusal allowed. If you said take me to Bray which is in wicklow he can refuse.

Some interesting bits and bobs here.
    Taximeter Areas

A taximeter area is a designated area within which metered taxis can operate. Taxis can ply for hire on street within the taximeter area and stand at ranks, where they are provided. While taxis are operating within the taximeter area maximum fare control is implemented, whereby taxis are obliged to calculate the fare by using the meter which will indicate the maximum fare chargeable at the end of the trip. The driver can charge a reduced amount if he/she so wishes, but the fare displayed is the maximum that can be charged. If a trip takes the taxi beyond the taximeter area, the driver is not obliged to use the meter, as the trip effectively becomes a private hire. The manner of the calculation of the fare should be agreed at the commencement of the hiring in this instance. If a trip takes a taxi from its own taximeter area into an adjoining taximeter area, the fare must be calculated on the meter. However, the taxi driver is not obliged to carry a passenger outside his or her taximeter area. The taxi is not permitted to ply for hire within the neighbouring area. Taxis are only permitted to ply for hire in the taximeter area for which they are licensed.

I've had some interesting Times regarding Taxi prices in dublin.

a few weeks ago i got a taxi from the bottom of my road into the city center ( by the Yatch in Clontarf) and he dropped me off @ College Green it came to 5.50 did shopping and the like , was no more that 1 hour , got a taxi back home , got dropped off where i got picked up ( i wanted to see if there was a big difference) and sure enough i was gona be charged 9 quid ... i told him about my previous taxi ride , and he just wouldn't except it . I left 5.50 on the seat and got out .. he never came after me.

Note that nighttime fares are higher than daytime fares, the original driver may also have made a mistake in charging you too little. Luggage costs extra.

Wrong. As he was drunk, the taxi driver is entitled to refuse to drive him anywhere.

Most likely traffic was heavier coming back so the trip took longer - as the meter goes up one increment every 30 seconds or 1/9th of mile (whichever happens sooner) all that sitting in traffic would have increased the cost.
