Saw a dvd running in a shop - seemed to be a collection of a RTE series on Digital Camera usage - looked reasonably advanced. 8 episodes on dvd. Thought overpriced then - sorry didnt buy it now.

Hoped to find in Amazon or RTE.ie but cannot remember dvd name.

I think it was "In Focus" or something similar. By RTE I think - definitely Irish.

Anyone know what this program was called and maybe a link to show info?

    Thanks..

Google (as usual) is your friend in this case ...
The RTE series 'What a Digital Picture' is now available on video

With sponsorship from Fuji Photo Film, Podge Kelly, presenter of RTE’s digital photography programme What a Digital Picture, has made his entire series of programmes available in a two-part video box set.

Aimed at the amateur photographer looking to improve their snapping techniques, the videos explain the nuances of digital photography in simple English. There are in-depth guides to cameras, camera accessories, image resolution, flash, development, monochrome printing, hand tinting and taking still life shots.

A past president of the Irish Photographic Federation and Tallaght Photographic Society, Podge has been a judge for the Irish Photographer’s Association annual awards, so he’s we’ll equipped to give advice on setting up a digital darkroom. The video box set retails for £14.99 and is available from camera shops nationwide.

The info's a bit old (2001, prices in £) but it should help you find it in the shops. Some of the advice may be a bit outdated too, considering the technical advances since then.

Thanks - thats the one - I was correct with the name, but couldnt narrow down Google search on it - the videos are old but the newer dvd is 'In Focus'. Sound was off in the shop, so dont know how interesting he was - but it looked like it was taking you through ISO settings, Composition and some Photoshop retouching the 3 mins I saw. ta.

If this one is not so hot - Can anyone recommend a DVD (preferably) for digital camera usage - a christmas present for me oul' lad.

    thanks.

Sorry, I cannot think of any DVD's. You could try a post in the photography forum if this doesn't get far..

What sort of level are you looking for?

This is typical Irish crap, "not the most amazing photographer" "not the most exciting presenter either". The purpose of the DVD is to teach those for whom digital photography is a big mystery and a challenge and does it excellently.

Podge Kelly is one of the most highly respected and revered photographers in Ireland. With many distinctions and awards to his name, he has done what he's good at, communicating his knowledge and sharing it with others so they can learn and enjoy the art of photography too.

The photographer doesn't have to show amazing work on the DVD, just what works to illustrate the particular subject issue being discussed. Podge Kelly's photography will stand up to criticism from anyone who wishes to do so. That's not to say that his work is better than everyone else's, but it will stand comparison with the best that anyone can produce.

The success of the DVD series has seen it being sold to TV networks in America and Australia. The fact is, there is nothing else out there to service the market. An excellent product that will sell more than enough for Podge Kelly, to be worrie about a few critics in the home town.

If I was taking lessons on photography I'd prefer it to be from someone who has pictures that blow me away.

I'd love to see lessons from someonelike this guy: http://www.glennferon.com/portfolio1/index.html
on how to retouch a photograph

I first saw Podge Kellys program before I had a digital camera and to be honest it didn't help or encourage me in any way. He even admits on his website that he had no experience doing TV when RTE approached him

That was my comment about him not being the most exciting presenter, and I stand by it. Watching paint dry would have been more inspiring, however good a photographer he might be. Oh, and BTW, I'm not Irish either :)

You're the only two nicks that came to mind that would have the skilset required.
(Obviously, I cannot say whether you would be more 'watchable')

He might not have to show amazing work on the DVD but perhaps he could show some in his portfolio on his site maybe?

I've just had a look through his gallery and there was nothing that jumped out at me.
He seems far too fond of photoshop.
Some horrible use of blurring on those shots of the marching band members.
You can clearly see they're altered.

But, if the DVD helps some people out then fair enough.

Podge is a camera club type of guy, you know a perfectly serviceable picture named gratingly unimaginatively like, "man and gate", boring but the DVD series In Focus was well recommended. you can still get it in Gunn's on wexford street.
