I was thinking of buying an Amacom Baby DVD+/-RW - DVD±RW. Not really sure what all those"+"s and "-"s actually mean but I have been assured that I'll be able to put MP3s on a disc with it and play them in my hifi! Thats all I want.(Please contradict me if this is not true!)
However it says that it's USB 2 interface...and I only have USB1 on my laptop. The Amacom doesnt mention being USB1 compatible. Does any one know if it will work with a USB 1 laptop? The obvious answer to me seems to be no...but Im asking in the vain hope that it will and that I'll get this Christmas bargain. Thank you in advance to anyone who replies.

afaik a usb 2 device will operate at the slower 1.1 speeds ..

First thing to check is whether your hifi can read dvd's! Assuming it does, some USB 2 devices are backwards compatible, and are able to run at a slower speed (usb 1). It would normally say that it will though.

If you've already shelled out and it is not compatible with usb1, you can get a pcmcia card that will allow you to add usb2 to your notebook.

Or, and this might be stretching it, buy a replacement notebook DVD burner and install that instead of your current one. You'd want to be pretty handy to do this. Check locally, there may be someone willing to install it for you if you buy one.

afaik, that dvd-rw will write to cd aswell. However, it is SERIOUS overkill. If all you want is to burn mp3's to a cd and play them on your hifi then just buy a cd burner for about a third of the price. Also you need to check whether your cd player will play mp3s...

Assuming it does... AND it read dvds... AND you want to put 4GB of mp3 onto one disk then this is the drive for you... maybe...

Its also worth checking if the person who told you that you could play the mp3s on your hi-fi didn't just mean burnig them to CD as audio files. i.e 80 mins of music.

If you're looking to burn an audio CD, as mordeith says, then any USB cd writer will do the trick. I think the fastest you'll get on USB1.1 is 4x writing to CD. For this reason, I'm pretty sure that no DVD writer will operate on a USB1.1 connection, as even 1x DVD writing speed is faster than the USB1.1 can handle. So DVD writing would be impossible, and you should just by a CD writer instead.

Do consider getting a USB2 PCMCIA card though, they can be bought for around €40 and would allow you to use the writer properly.
