my class mates expensive laptop is after being stolen from our study room.
was just wonderin since i have my own laptop if the password to access windows is sufficient to stop intruders. he has very "personal" photos and is worried that they may pop up on some site. a common thief would not have the brain capacity to by-pass it methinks or am i wrong. any info will be mucho obligo.
    thanks in advance

well unless he's taken care to protect his stuff, the theif could simply boot into safe mode and log into the administrator account which is enabled by default and has no password by default, or at least i found it was on a lot of friends pc's that i've had to fix

no you see the laptop was turned off what i am saying is that when that little (or big) **** turns on the laptop and is asked for the pass word will he just be able to reset it or what. or if he cant will he just throw it in the bin.?

LOL, he could just stick in a XP cd and reload windows all together :).

its possible he might be able to get around it. But I reckon any thief would simply wipe the laptop and install a fresh copy of windows. Password won't stop them doing that.

ah ok right, theres a bios password on it, well he can open the laptop up and reset the bios but laptops cmos batteries are very hard to get to, other than that he can use a 2.5"-3.5" ide adapter to hook the harddrive up to a pc and grab the files from there afaik

if the boot from cd option isn't set to true in the bios then they shouldn't be able to wipe/install windows without the password/reseting the password
