los of differences ... but basically to sum up:
Celeron = surfing internet, MS Word etc ... business use
    Pentium = everything else

Mind you, top end Celerons arent so bad any more ...but there is still a huge difference between them and a decent Pentium 4

Not really great for games. Depends on what kind of games though. If you're looking to play the latest and greatest 3D games, then it's a no-no.

No. It's a rock solid chip.

Multi-tasking is more a factor of the operating system and the available memory than the chip.

As Khannie said, Celerons will generally not handle 3D games. Along with that, Celeron based systems tend to come with lower spec graphics card and less memory, again impacting ability to play games.

would the celeron be good enough to play Fifa 06 and football manager.

How much of a graphics card would i need ? or does this make any difference?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

It depends on the speed of the celeron.

Check the minimum requirements for those games (google), but from what I've seen of football manager it should be fine.

    its an Intel® Celeron® D Processor 331 (2.66GHz, 533FSB, 256k cache)
and the Ram is 512MB Dual Channel DDR 400MHz (2X256MB DIMM) Memory [Included in Price]

Graphics Card - cant see one - probably intergrated graphics?

How would FIFA 06 or Quake fair out on this system .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭commited

Quake 4 will be a no go, i know that much
Probably the same for fifa 06.
You're better off buying a games console if your budget is that low.

Let me guess that quote is for a dell? You might want to publish your budget on here - then some kind soul might suggest a good deal for you.

You might be wise to get a pc that you can build upon as you get more money in that case a dell wouldnt be the best choice since they arent the most upgradeable pc's.

Another option would be to get a 2nd hand system from the for sale forums, Im sure posters here would be willing to advise you.

500 to 700 would be the budget for pc and printer /scanner all in one. Hoping to buy new. Just want a computer to do all the basics.

Also does Works 7.0 come with WORD and if it doesnt what would the word processor be like.

    Quake4 isn't "the basics" tbh.

The machine you quoted would be fine for "office" style work, but not gaming.

Quake 4 definately isnt the basics.
You'll want to spend a fair bit more to get something that'll capable of quake 4 level of gaming.

I wouldn't recommend going the Dell route. Up your budget by about 200 euros, in fairness. In a retail outlet, you'll get a decent entry-level laptop for around €799 - but no, not one good enough to run Quake 4 or FIFA 06. You'll get a decent multifunction machine (printer/scanner/copier) for less than €100.

No it doesn't come with Word. Works SUITE comes with Word.

The Works word processor is fairly basic and not up to the standard of Word 2003. Think of it as a slightly souped-up version of WordPad (which comes free with Windows).

www.OpenOffice.org is free and also handles Excel and Powerpoint docs.
There are also other free word replacements so unless you have a huge inverstment in word macros or third party apps Word/Office are a complete waste of money on your budget.

OP on your budget I wouldnt even consider a laptop unless some kind of portability is an issue.

Do you definately need an All-in-one? Is it for fax/photo copying etc? Could you not get just a printer for now and upgrade later?

I recently bought a new PC for €500 with 1Gb ram and 80Gb Hard Disk from Jaguar in Dublin, they do excellent stuff at savage prices, you should have a look there. Personally for gaming I'd go with a Sempron x x x ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,709 ✭✭✭Balfa

Any new celeron is perfect for everything (a sempron is even perfecter). If you want to play games, you'll need a good video card. Don't worry about the processor. The difference in speed between various processors is nowhere near worth the difference in price. Video cards are far and away the best way to get value performance.

Just to drive the point home, compare the following upgrades that someone could make. They're both pretty low end upgrades, but this trend continues across the entire spetrcum. I don't do intel, so i'm not as familiar with Celeron/P4, but i'm sure it's not going to be that much different.

In short: Don't worry about your CPU (within reason), just get a better video card!

    Athlon 3200+ from sempron 2800+ = 28% performance increase*
    $174 from $75 = $99

    nVidia 6200TC from Intel GMA950 = 533% performance increase**
    $45 from $0 = $45

What Balfa says makes some sense alright. One thing that hasnt been underlined is that if you budget is that tight forget intel.

Go for AMD - their processors generally give you more bang for the buck. Especially at the end of the price range you are working to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,709 ✭✭✭Balfa

and to clarify further, if you buy the cheapest PC that dell sell (e479 at first glance), buy 512MB of RAM (e50) to add to the 256 it comes with, and a GeForce 6600GT (e160) from komplett, you'll be able to play Quake 4 quite nicely for under your e700 budget.

That's not how I'd do it, but it's fairly straightforward, not to expensive, and it achieves your aim.

You should watch out for the cheaper Dells though! My friend got one last year, thinking he could just buy that and get a better graphics card - the crappy motherboard didn't even have an AGP port!

I wouldn't be surprised if the newer ones didn't similarly have no 16x PCI-Express slots either.

That would be correct, neither the 1100 nor 3100 have slots for graphics. Fine motherboards, just intentionally crippled by Dell so as not to cannabalise the sales of the higher priced machines. Understandable from their point, tbh, but they should advertise the fact more plainly.

If you want to play Football Manager then graphics won't matter too much but a pentium4 will make a difference. FM loves to chew up CPU cycles.

That's definitely true. You can never have too fast a CPU for football manager. But the old paying more and more for tinier and tinier increments in performance still stands its ground against this one.

That thing about the cheap dells not having AGP slots... sucks. I guess my idea won't work :(
