How much to ask for?

    Hi, a mate ajnd me will be starting work in Janurary for a company in Dublin. We're just finished college now but had a six month work placement there over the summer. They asked us back but we re not sure how much to ask for?
    The contract will be a permenent and when we re were on placement we were getting €18,000.

    Some suggestions from other members of the class were €25,000 but that seems a bit high???

    Any suggestions of how much to ask for our what companies usally give for just out of college employees? ;)

    PC support analysts with Certs in Computer networking and optical communications, Diplomas in Computers Systems Management and Degree is Computin and IT Management.
    We ve had six months experiance working for said company. We ll basically fixing PC s, building them, looking after servers, suggesting improvements etc.

    just see what they give you.if you think its good then its ok if not then work for themfor the year get experience and move to another company that gives higher wages:D

    I would second that. They have to pay you the same or in excess of the placement. Stick with it for at least six months (over a year would be better) and if the $$ are low then cast around for another job while you're still there. Experience at this point in your career is of more importance than the $$ and the more you get the better the chances of a higher payday at some point.
    I know you don't wanna be undervalued either but still, get on the ladder and see...

    I was on 18,000 for software placement.

    Then I graduated. Started in new company.

    Went in on 22,000 three months ago on a temporary contract. Now permanent on 23,000.

    Ask for €24,000. They obviously think you're good enough to ask back. If they say "...no, but we'll give you €21,000/€22,000", then your ok. That's fair enough for straight out of college.

    yes i agree always ask for a bit more and then you can bargain with them and come to an agreement. 25000 to me is not that high i think its fair. you will always get less on a placment as your not qualified and they can be wary of you. the fact that they asked you back speaks volumes- they were obv impressed so they would prob be happy to give you more! the others are right about the experience though its important to have some on your cv asap and the money will roll in later on

    Oh i know we re definately giong back, experiance is the most important thing but was just wondering how much to ask for cause the boss emailed us asking for an updated CV and communicate salaries. So we just wanted to make sue we got a fair rate

    25k is perfectly reasonable if the job is based in Dublin...

    Ask for at least 25,000 anyways, Thats less than 500 € a week which isn't great pay.

    €25000 in my mind is too high for a graduate job in a non development / programming position in my mind. Correct me if i am wrong. My first year i started on €25k for a development role.

    Why do people think that a development role is worth more then say a sys admin role?

    I dont "think" its worth more than a sys admin but in reality starter sys admin generally get paid crap for the first few years but make it back in time.

    25k is the norm even in non-dev roles, everyone I know gets about that. Thats including people in tech support.

    I think im on fairly good money for what I do as a Sys Admin who is just out of college be it with a masters.

    Just saying as some people in devlopment roles think that these "techies" are beneath them even they there is lots more to learn as a system administrator type jobs IMO.

    Im basing my opinion here on non helpdesk work.

    My course in college was based at both roles and having an interest in both development and sys admin i would agree that there is a lot of stuff in both areas to learn. I'm close to our sys admin guy in work and well hes far from a grad but i get to see many of the problems he confronts and have great respect for what he does. By me saying then tend to earn less in starter positions im not saying it is easier or beneath dev. positions just saying in general the starting salary is less. These days i would expect a dev. roll to start @ €26+ with sys admin anywhere between €22+ I've been out drinking so blame the above on drink if its a pile of ****e.... must remember to turn off pc before going to pub.

    Well 25k would be a dream to us so i thinnk we ll be asking for that. As you said it is in dublin and when i was on placement up there i was just making it to the end of the month on what i was getting so a big increase on that would have to be done to keep me at least alive :)

    Absolutely. Forget all the rules about who usually gets what for what type of role (sys admin/development etc)... That's all bull at this stage. If it's in Dublin ask for at least €25k, otherwise you wont have a life for the next five years.

    Try looking at it hourly, in your own time, now...

    Consider that you are worth at least 7.65 and then work up to what "sounds"/"looks" too high/unrealistic.

    Now multiply *40*5*52 etc and see what you come up with
