Ok Guys, need serious help here.

My dell work machine has died. When I boot it I get a blue screen, and it says something like unmountable boot

I've inserted the dell xp disk and tried the recovery process. I get to the recovery console but when I type chkdsk /r/p or fixboot nothing works.

The commands are interpreted, but chkdsk stays at 0%

I'm currently using data-recovery software to retrieve some data, but if anyone has any ideas how I could get the hd back up and running, I'd be extremely grateful!

    Thanks,
    Martin

Do you have a second machine that you can put your DELL primary drive into?
Set it as slave in the second machine.

If this works, you can get your data off it and then maybe do some diagnostics on it.

    HArd drive might be knackered.

    Is it in Warrenty?

Yeah do you have warranty with the machine? How old is it? And what machine?

    Fusion

I have it in a second machine now. Couldn't access it as a slave. I could see it, but not read it. Using some recovery software now, to try and get data back from it. Hopefully, I'll get some of my work back.

It is under warrenty, but I'm more concerned anout getting my data back than getting a new hd...

btw its a dell dimension with a maxtor diamondmax plus 9 160 gb hd

Edit: HA!! Just spotted this thread started last December. May as well leave my response, someone might use it.

Similar thing happened to my laptop. This is what I did but it might not suit you depending on your experience I guess.
    • I got a Ubuntu Live cd and booted from this. ( you can download it I think too, I'll check)
    • This loaded the Ubuntu operating system without doing anything to the hardrive and stuff, your original files are untouched.
    • I then mounted my windows drive, (this should work even if some of the drive is corrupt)
    • copied my files to an external hardrive (burn them to a CD or whatever)
    • then reinstalled windows.

I have since converted my laptop to Ubuntu permanently,
