It only happens in work. Do a lot of CAD work and there is a lot of clicking sometimes.

Dont think telling the boss my finger hurts and I'm taking 10 would go down to well!

I think your boss would let you take 10 mins off,

who wants their company in the newspapers with the headline reading: boss forces his computer specialist employee to work till he gets crippled! ;)

You can massage it, it might help, but like I said the only true help is to give it a rest,

I'm pretty sure besides pain, you also feel tension and heaviness

If you really can't take a rest, the best solution is to learn to use mouse with the other hand. Takes a bit of time, but you'll get used to it, I did :) when MX500 came out I loved it so much I learned to use it with the right hand(those southpaw hating logitech sobs ;(), now I pretty much use all mice with the right hand and I can pull off headshots pretty easily :)

the beginnings of repetitive strain injury - now there's something your boss should not ignore.

If he does, tell his personal injury insurance broker that he ignores your concerns about RSI - they'll be quick to lump on the extra premiums.

Yeah he should listen to this. Ah the boss isnt that bad but I'm kinda new here and dont want to get on his bad side!

I've strated to use the 2nd finger from the tumb. A bit awkward but it works!

You could always try this free program

WorkRave - RSI recovery software (break reminder with exercise suggestions)
    http://www.workrave.org/welcome/index.php

It's pretty annoying at times but its there to help

You can get ones which require less clicking, or ones which have an orb which you move instead of moving the whole thing about. Plus they programmable buttons.

I have a Logitech MX1000. So try either logitech or Microsoft. Komplett have a fair few selections.

I got a pain in my wrist from my MX1000 ... to stop it I had to stick a big lump of blutack on the back of it (savage slope on the back of it) and no problems now :D

I was having wrist trouble so I switched to using my left hand in work. It makes your brain hurt for the first week or so (seriously), but now it's just second nature.

Seriously improved my left hands co-ordination too.

You wont be able to do seriously accurate stuff with it for at least a month, but clicking buttons etc. is fine.

    Cool, must try that.

    mx510 ftw

hand sits smoothly over whole mouse requiring little movement for anything :)

Also try varying how you hold the mouse. You can vary whether you rest your palm on the mouse, or hold you hand above it moving the mouse with your thumbg and 3rd and little fingers. You can also vary between arching your button fingers using the tips to push the buttons, or resting the fingers on the buttons. There's loads of little variations in between too. The problems are generally caused by having your hand in the same position making the same repetitive movements over a period of time. It's almost like if you try to lift your hands up to shoulder height with your arms fully outstretched, holding even a small weight for any length of time becomes painfull pretty quickly.

Let me know if your brain hurts too. It defo fixed my sore wrist problems though. More of a load balancing thing.

I did something similar and swapped over from right to left. My brain wasn't sore but it did take some getting used to and quite a number of miskeys. Now I just alternate between the two and find I don't have much trouble anymore.

Just swap the mouse to left-handed but continue to use your right hand. All it does is reverse the functions of the two buttons so you can use your middle finger instead of your index finger to click. Swap it a couple of times during the day. A change is as good as a rest.

Windows 98 / 2K / Xp can all take more than one mouse.
So you could simply put one on the left and one on the right and swap over.
Also track balls can be difficult to get used and not everyone likes them. Those that do like them usually threaten violence if you even suggest they go back to an ordinary mouse.

Microsoft get another black mark in my book for hiding the ALT combination and changing keywords all the time. Most stuff can be done without the mouse.

control panel - display properties - appearance - effects
untick the box that HIDES the underline until I press ALT

RANT - press the windows key to see the start menu , now press the alt key to try to see the underlines /RANT

you can also hotkey your most commonly used apps - switch between them without using the mouse.

Alt-Spacebar if you want to move / minimise /maximise windows using the arrow keys etc.

    Could be RSI kicking in.....

Or you may have a history of arthritis in your family?

    z0mg! Carpal Tunnel Syndrome! :p

Ah yes, the annoyingness of ergonomic injuries: my hand starts going cold after using a mouse for a fair while, no blood flowing to it, very annoying.
