Can I expect much of a difference with advanced Scart?

Heres the deal, I paid 800 two months ago for a 32" slimline CRT samsung. Now I have the xbox 360 connected through the hd cable (via scart connection). Now I am trying to decide wether to fork out another 30euro (or use all my game points) on the advanced SCART cable. I have an RGB input so if I was to get one would I notice much of a difference, or are components better?

i would imagine the best improvement would be to invest in the HD VGA cable, that should give you the best resolution i would imagaine .. having said that, i am looking for one of these cables for two weeks now without success, does anyone know where there are some available?

I got one in the city centre at the weekend in smyths jervis st, and btw try not to get one in game as they charge 27.99 while i got mine for 24.99. Smyths had a good few left and just around the corner peats had two rack loads of them( at €24.99 too). Just a pity i cant test this cable out till the 25th.....

ive always gone with the what ever type of cable it is, go out and spend the money on a proper one. The scart going from my dvd to my tv was €35 and the difference is immense.

Noticed the component hd one in smyths at the weekend, that should give the same picture improvement as the vga (presuming you have compontent inputs)

yeah skywalker they have some of the component ones in a few shops but i need the VGA one, i have a philips 23" LCD TV and its HD but it doesn't have component inputs ;-(

Defo go for the RGB cable. I picked one up, and the picture is much sharper and the colours much clearer. Personally, i would never use a composit cable, the only thing worse than composit is UHF connection and no by much. the cable that comes with the premium pack, when used with a standard TV isa composit cable... invest the 25euro in the RGB scart... you won't regret it!!
oh, and i got mine in Gamestop in Clarehall Tesco on launch day.

I would have to agree 100%. Much better with a scart than composite (which is what you are getting if you connect the advanced AV cable to a scart adaptor).

I saw some in Harvey Norman at the weekend for €25

Sorry lads. What is an RGB cable? Is that the scart one that doesnt have the 3 cables going into the adapter?

yeah, but if the scart on your tv isn't RGB enabled, you wont see a difference

Got myself the Advanced SCART cable a day oafter I got my xbox. Once your TV supports RGB it will improve the picture quality.
GameStop in Santry used to have them btw last I checked.

Picked one up today and I must say the difference is phenomonal, before I had real trouble reading text while sitting down which is crystal clear now. It is not as good (obviously) as HDTV but is a good halfway stage

i have a 30 inch crt tv and the picture is great but the small text is hard to read so I'm thinking of getting the advanced scart cable.

However, one snag for me is that I want to run the audio output from the xbox 360 into my dvd player/amp for surround sound - as far as I can tell the scart cable will carry the audio aswell so I am snookered or is there some way to connect the video out to the tv via scart while also connecting the audio output to the amp?

Also, I can't see any digital out for sound which is poor, cos even my first generation Media Center Extender had digital audio out.

I think there is an optical out on the connector, just like the Xbox scart cable.

If you want an analog output look around for an unnoficial cable that splits the audio from the scart.

I would be interested to hear peoples opinions on whether the advanced scart has made a difference to people with ordinary CRT TV's like myself, I know its only 24.99 or so in most places but would it be 24.99 well spent ??
Happy new xbox year to all !:)

Yes, will make a difference. Makes it easier to read small text and also the colours are sharper.

glad to hear the scart cable has a digital audio output on it - solves one of my problems as I can use that to hook up to my dvd player/amp and get surround sound going. The bundled lead has a plastic block basically tying the rca audio outs to the video out and it didnt leave enough leeway for me to connect the video to tv and the audio to the amp. Tried cutting into the cable but its all braided in shiny metal stuff so I left it.

Anyone know of any shops with the scart cable in stock, and why the hell there should be a shortage of something as simple as a poxy scart cable if it really was supposed to be a proper product launch?

When I got one for my Xbox I was impressed enough to go and buy one for my GC and PS2 aswell. Money well spent.

does anyone know of any shops in Dublin that actually have the advanced scart cable in stock?

My TV is borrowed from a mate who is off travelling - how do I tell if it has an rgb scart input?

On the end that goes into the xbox there is an optical output for your reciever!

thanks - what I was saying is theres no digital out on the xbox 360 itself, and I'm pretty sure theres none on the standard cables that came with it (right?). As I haven't seen the advanced scart cable I didnt know it has an optical audio out on it, but I'm glad to hear it does!

So, does anyone know where to get my grubby mitts on one of these?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,870 ✭✭✭Julez

You can get them online on ebay, but at the moment its hard to find in any shops! Yeah, can't bellieve there was no optical output on the system itself! Thats just scabby! I'd expect more from the next generation of consoles!

i saw them in gamestop in dun laoghaire today. 24.99

Yes, they go into the scart socket and there is a noticable improvment. Its sharper and colours are improved.

lads - is there a shop that might be selling the scart cable in Dundrum shopping centre (the new one)? would call and see if i could collect this tonight if there is.

I'll be using it for digital audio - whats the name of the cable I need and wheres best for buying it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,870 ✭✭✭Julez

Pretty much all the extra cables u get will have digital output, but if ur just on an ordinary tele go for the advanced scart, picture is a little clearer and 5.1 is so much better!

ordered this off PLay.com the other day when it said it was in stock. Now it says out of stock and I haven't received confirmation that mine has shipped so looks like they took my order when it was actually out of stock - that bites my bollock.

Why oh why is there such a shortage of these things - I can understand delays in the production of the console, but they should have been able to lash loads of the accessories together in no time.

I always get all tangled up in this talk about Scart , RGB etc! (Pun completly intended)

I was thinking of buying this cable for putting the box into my PC monitor when I can, but for my regular crappy little TV what would I be looking for ( pictures/links would be great! ) is it this one?

Also, does anyone have some good links to HDTVs in Ireland, preferably ones below 20", want to get a rough idea of pricing etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Clank

    Yep your right Smellyirishman.

http://www.komplett.ie/k/kl.asp?bn=10455 , dont know if those prices are any good though.

K, I will look for one of those so. The picture on my crappy ass telly is so bad sometimes I cannot make out text! Shame to have that problem with a next gen console but I know it's my lame ass MoFo TV :D.

€320 ain't so bad I guess, don't think I will be getting one anytime soon though :-).

    Thanks for the help.

hang on a sec, I've ordered this cable from play.com thinking it was the advanced scart pack, but this one that you've posted is more expensive.

I'm looking for the cable which gives the best picture for a CRT TV and also allows me to use the digital audio output of the 360 - anyone know which one that is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Clank

Ones the official and one isnt thats all.
The picture on the one you ordered is wrong thats all, it says its the right cable.

I know of people whove been sent the wrong cable by Play.com though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,032 ✭✭✭FrankGrimes

so have I ordered the right (official) one? Though the one I ordered is cheaper I went for it cos of the description describing gold plated connectors and pointing out that it has digital audio connection, which the other description doesn't list.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Smellyirishman

No, you ordered the unoffical one but it does the same job and then some... I think .

Plenty of the Scart leads in Peats in town, and Gamestop I think. They (gamestop) said nobody has had the VGA cable since 5th December! but that they will be getting them in some time after saturday.

As a side note, I guess no matter what cable I get my TV just can't hack it, the scart made little to no difference. I guess I will offload it for €20 if someone wants it.

Looking forward to getting the VGA cable though, as I own this monitor!
The result; I don’t want to leave the seat in front of the DELL UltraSharp 2005FPW. The Xbox 360 looks amazing here, from the dashboard to all the games played. High resolution videos look as good as when played on the desktop computer that is also attached to the monitor as well.
