Ouch -sorry dude, if I had known those were there I would have had them repaired. The must have been rotting away behind the underseal ? If it helps any, I have worse rust on my "new" Stag. See here:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054858588

The floor on yours has had new sections welded in in the past and it looks like the welding on one side has gone bad - not difficult to repair. That chassis piece (box) that is rusted will need replaced. Fortunately those parts are cheap. Check here -

    http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/rimmer/triumph/stag/bodyparts

search for part# 714538, also known as the outrigger and costs £27 STG. From what I have been gathering so far, the work there will cost you about €150 to €200 to repair. I have holes in four corners of the car and one in the middle of the floor and it's going to cost €450 to repair - so you can see what I'm getting at with the estimate of €250

    Thanks Frank.

Thats the part i req, i did not know that was a part that can be replaced :)
I wAS going to get metal steel plates, and cut in to the shapes that will then be welded on the damage holes. as i,m a very good welder. but if that part is easy anoth to come of i will weld new one in place.
    does your man do welding??
as i have not a welder yet, and really can't be bothed. as to COLD.

I don't know if Doug at Mounttown does welding - although he had someone doing some surgery on a Mustang 350GT last time I was there, so perhaps he does...

I'd love to learn to weld - wonder if they do nightclasses...

I think this looks quite nasty, esp 275, 276, 277 - what part of the car are these pics of. Also pic 292 doesn't look great either.

Lucky that you're handy with a welder :)

i learned how to weld many years ago. as i used to own a s/cosworth,and it needed a complete floor. its easy anoth though. but takes practice. if you were local to me. i would help to weld your stag:)

but the stag is a diff layout, so i have to do me homework. once i start the job, it will be Class. it dont seem to bad ' only that rightside needs taking care off. the other side is spot on...ads
PS: WHATCH THIS SPACE. AND I WILL SHOW YOU ALL PICTURES OF MY WELDING .

Do you think this is why there is a rust problem in this area, as there is a big Hole in the side. i'm sure that water finds away in getting in that area.as because that hole??!! i wonder. i,m going to weld both side shut....ads

You should invest in a car tilter for turning the car on its side. It will make light work of floor and sill repairs. I bought one at the Beulieau Autojumble a few years ago new for 350 sterling. It works with a power drill to raise and lower and I would say it one of the best pieces of equipment I have ever bought. I have seen them at many shows since so they are easily available.

Today i brought me self a mig welding kit.
    (01) must always disconnect the car battery : )
So i have now started to do the job, cleaned and prepaired all area of damage part. i,v taken the old outrigger off with a grinder. next step is to replace with new outrigger'and then plug weld it from the inside of the car then tidy up the ends from underneath. and then driver side floor will need doing. i will show you a picture when the welding is all finished.

    PS: Really COLD today.......ADs

It's a MIG Welder - things to consider
You tend to get what you pay for with MIG welders, with the specification of the cheaper welders being compromised to reduce price.
It cost me €250 thats with all the kit. got it in roscommon from a guy who gets tools from London.
Cheaper welders will tend to be less robust, and may be more tricky to use than more expensive welders due to things like poorer wire speed control.

    Yah sure Frank.
details & pics will be sent to you maybe in 2 days.i will love to see my project on your webpage. nightclass for welding ?? Like i said it's a shame you an't local to me. Practice and more practice
The way to learn MIG welding is to practice running welds on a sheet of steel. Thicker sheets are easier to weld than thin ones, so it's best to practice with 1.5mm sheet (or thicker). Familiarize yourself with the feel of the welding torch during welding, and play around with the motion, wire speed and amperage.

Spend a couple of hours on and off on your technique. Then you can start welding sheets of metal together.

    How many amps?
It really depends what you plan to weld. I use a 155 amp welder which can comfortably cope with 3mm sheet steel (the manufacturer suggests 6mm).

Car chassis steel rarely exceeds 2mm, and body steel is normally 1mm, so a lighter duty welder should be sufficient for automotive welding.

A sensible minimum amperage for car welding would be about 130 amps.

55 to 80 Amps for that one. No good then. There only decent one there is £200 STG --> which is what, €300 ?

Seems like a good price you are getting yours for !

80 amps , i would not touch it. get a decent one. trust me it's worth the little extra. i was lucky today to get my one, as the guy gets tools from London. and i always buy tools from him. so i got a good price. its the top of the range welder......when are you getting the welding done?? why don't you learn with your new welder you buy and do it your self. But GET the really bad bits done by a pro. depends on how quick you learn......ADs;)
