"Printer is not ready"

We've got a few servers out there running either redhat 9 or fedora core 3 that are giving the same problem. We have dot matrix printers connected via jetdirects that stop printing and on viewing the print queue it says "printer is not ready" or something to that effect. Is there any way of making the printer ready without reinstalling it?
