USB Device conflict

Maybe someone can help: I have a new PC, I've put XP Pro SP2 on it, all working fine. It has a flash card reader which gives me 4 drive letters in addition to the DVDs, so up to I:. All was working fine, I got an external hard drive the other day and plugged it in - gave me J:. But then I couldn't use the card reader - comes up as "Unknown Device" in device manager.

It works when I unplug the external HDD, then doesn't work again as soon as I plug the external drive back in. The card reader is shown as a "Mass Storage Device" when the ext. drive is not plugged in, then when I plug the ext. drive in the card reader goes to "Unknown Device" and the ext. drive becomes the "Mass Storage Device".

Anyone any clues? I've tried new drivers for the card-reader, no joy - still same problem. I see no reason why both shouldn't work together.

Have you tried the two devices (card reader and HD) in different USB ports? I've never seen anything like that before, but trying alternate USB ports might be a start, if you haven't already.

Thanks, tried the external drive in another port, the card reader is internal.

(If you have the ports) Try plugging the HDD into the reverse end of the PC..

    Just checking:
    - does the ext. HDD have it's own power source?
    - are you using a HUB?

Hmmm.... got it working. I only have 4 USB ports on the machine, so I stuck in another 4 ports on a PCI card the other day. Just moved the external drive onto one of those instead of where it was and hey presto, both now work together.

The internal card reader must be on the same USB controller that I had plugged the external drive into and didn't like it. Can't understand it though.

Anyway thanks for the suggestions folks. :)
