I'm in Software Development. I enjoy the creativity (have design autonomy) just utterly bored at the moment with tapping away at a keyboard 5 days a blessed week.... Not a hope of changing at my time o'life, 3 kids & wife to support...... just dreaming really....

Would love to do something more creative......

Isnt there some nightcourses you can do or something to help bring about a change? surely the missus would be supportive if you told her you were eventually going to go off your nut, and she would have to give up her credit cards? ;)

I switched from a creative role to software development. Graphics is a bit of rat race to be honest and the salaries aren't as good as in software dev. I think it very much depends on the work you are doing and the people you are working for. When I was contracting I wasn't really learning that much as you get paid for you know. Where I am know I'm learning new stuff all the time and its much harder but more interesting because of it. I would like to introduce more graphics elements to what I'm doing though. With a family myself, I wouldn't be rushing back to the unreliabilty and unpredictablity of creative/design sectors. Any colleagues I know still at it are struggling.

Thanks for the comments guys, I know NightCourses would be an option, the issue being I'm unclear about what I wanna do ?!? No definitive path (more in a bit), I too was in the graphics before moving into Software Development, freelancer. For the abilities of most people, the $$$ are cr@p and thats v.disappointing as I loved the freedom of it.

As for wot I'd love to do, creativity for me at least is the key. I LOVE software when I'm developing neat, cool and groovy stuff (no more so thand decent web engines (they look good for little effort :D ), but I reckon I must suffer from ADD or something as I'm simply not interested in concentrating on boring stuff for more than five minutes (mind wanders)M and I do something, ANYTHING other than do the work  .... hence my post here :D ....

Meet your brother. Incredibly hard to stay focused on tasks that I'm not into. In fact on my design course I did for my degree I'd say the majority of people on it were the same. Poor attention spans unless its was something they were into. If they were into something they would work day and night to achieve it.

I'm actually a lot better now, than I used to be. I think that software development requires such attention to detail that you have to be focused to do it. So it kinda trains your mind a bit. However I see software and process problems as design problems. Just not as pretty to look at. Was a real mind wreck switching from a design mindset where you look at the big picture so software where you looking at every character you input. Both require lateral thinking though. A couple from my class switched from design to software dev.

I've in the middle of trying a part-time course and failing miserably. When you've young kids and busy at work its nigh on impossible.

Wots that tacky american saying "Yo Bro !!"...:D (works here tho !)...

How long since you switched ?? I switched about 9 years ago and I do honestly find software very rewarding but I'm at a level now where I don't want the drudgery work ? Tried and enjoyed technical team mentoring and leading but am now developing on my own (next best thing to a repressive company that won't let you do things you know are needed :( )..., just the attention span when enticed by more interesting stuff is still suffering. Gimme a tight deadline and a see-able goal and I'll deliver. Leave me on me own with an internet connection and expect nothing !!.....

Got so bad I keep hoping for the lottery...

I tried a night course to kick start me on J2EE. Apalling, I knew more than the tutor did and the Pc's kept crashing every five minutes. Gave up, could learn more from a book or tutorials.

Problem with me tho, I just don't want a career job anymore (mid life crisis maybe :D ).... Want to go and build a shed out the back of my house and buy a load of woodworking gear and make furniture ! (sad eh...)....

    Ah well...back to online chess...:D

On and off I've been in IT for 10yrs. But switched completely to software dev about 3yrs ago. Done some contracting work as a business analyst/developer and that was more interesting than pure development, or managing, team leading.

The furniture design think is a common dream for ex designers. My mate and I have a workshop picked out and everything. Lotto been there. That 120m euro lotto was MINE.... I also think about getting a taxi or going back and doing a trade etc.

However what I'm actually doing is working to broaden the skillset and get some certs etc. Hence the college course. Lack of motivation doesn't help. For good and bad I'm in really nice job at the moment, which I'm really enjoying after the ups and down of contracting.

Yeah, contracting these days is not for the feint hearted (or if you 've got kids) as you need to work away if, like me you're not near a major city... I was in Holland for two years (Pre 9/11), loved it, was nearly divorced over it tho :D, would go back to contracting in a heartbeat, it suits me better, seeing the $$ roll thru the door, you know what you're working for then.
Funny you mention the furniture thing. I never mention it case I get the p1ss taken outta me, didn't know it was as common :) ....

How did see turn it around? She was successful music exec, first managing, then married to a rich rock star long before she was 40. Shes infamous in Heavy Metal Circles, since the 80's.
