i have 2 compaq laptops, both are fairly old
the first is an armada 4160t, i need to take the data off this hard drive, however this unit is completley dead, will not boot at all.
anybody here done a rescue on a laptop before?

an easy way would be to place in a similar model, however finding this would not be easy. i am going to try to other laptop that i have, but i dont think it will fit. does anybody know an easy way/have links on how to get data from one hard drive to another?are there any issues to look out for?

    - Try booting from a LiveCD (If you get POST..)

    - Get a 2.5" enclosure - pop the HDD in and connect via USB/Firewire (i.e. Whatever the enclosure permits)

    - Use SpinRite (Commerical software) if it is a HDD issue.

You'll be able to get a USB 2.5" enclosure from ebay for about €7. Then take the hard drive out of the laptop and place in enclosure and plug into a usb port.
    Take off data. sorted :)

When you say it's totally dead, I assume you mean there are no signs of life? if so the above is pretty much your only option. Otherwise, as Karoma said, Knoppix Live CD & another ext hard disk will allow you to transfer the data over.
