XB360 Marketing Campaign ????

A month ago I sat up eagarly everytime an ad break came on tv hoping it was time for the XBox360 ad campaign would be kicking off any time. But the weeks went on on NOTHING !!!, then 2 or 3 days there was this PS2 ad with the words Xbox 360 at the end , what the hell was this ??

    Some points.....

    1. Microsoft (one of the biggest companies in the world) sell their new console, no decernable ad campaign
    2. The odd ad pops up here and there and it looks like an old PS2 one rebranded
    3. No "killer app" ????? What about PGR3, they could have used that to market the console on tv and billboards

I'm happy with the console, but I think the launch was uneventfull. My new XB360 owners would feel they spent their money on a better product and they have something special if they had advertisements for it shoved down their necks for at least a month before the launch.

SO MICROSOFT ??, WHERE IS THIS BIG CAMPAIGN YOU PROMISED US , WITH THE MTV TIE-IN ETC ???

    PGR3 isn't a killer-app, it's a racing game. Racing games don't have universal appeal imo.

I know what you're saying though.. I've seen virtually nothing of the 360 on TV aside from a few (pretty lackluster looking) adds for games. But then, the console has already more than sold out - so what's the point? Just to make you feel better about wasting €500? :p

Being someone who doesn't really want the console -- and indeed couldn't get it even if I did -- I'm quite happy not to have it shoved down my throat.

Why spend on marketing when consumer demand already exceeds supply?

To drum up more of a demand. More demand means more sales when the product actually becomes available.

I started to see the Jump In ad about a week or two before the launch, which seems odd, but does make sense in a way.
The launch was sold out months ago, and so any ads would just be appealing to people who aren't hardcore gamers and who don't have their sleeping bags ready for launch day. Consoles will only become available to them in the next month - 2 months, and so it may as well just be launching at that point, for all the softcore gamers care.

In a related issue, I was speaking to a manager of a game store about the fact that they hadn't gotten 360 pods but rivals had, and he pointed out that he wasn't bothered, at the point the pods were being shipped out he had all his allotted stock prebooked by people who didn't need to try before they buy (for whatever reasons). The new year will be the time to entice the average joe to buy the console, and that's when the adverts, pods etc. are most needed.

Its sold out so for now didnt need one, when is the next best time to launch a huge campaign? When the PS3 comes out.

yeah demand way exceeds supply, but every company should do a marketing campaign. not just to drum up demand and sell more units, but to change public perception of the console.

J allard himself has said this generation, xbox is trying to change it's public persona. it's not going to do that without ads.

the ones they have made are ripping off the playstation ads of times gone by (the playstation ads are award-winning btw). the banned one with everyone playing guns with their hands was useless. it would have made sense if they were advertising a shooting game with loads of online players at one time, but it wasn't.

If they went nuts with advertising before launch, it would have been a waste of money as there is feck all machines available. They will probably start advertising more heavily when supply even remotely nearly meets demand.

They had the 'jump in' or whatever ads around the launch, and the count down print ads in some type of 'newspaper' I found on the ground... wouldn’t any more at this stage just be a waste?

I’ve seen more media coverage (or should I say fluff) for the 360 then ever before including the PSP etc (although congrats to Sony for delaying the PSP, for most it probably does look like the better option for little Jonnie for Xmas)

There has been a bit of coverage on sky. Especially over the launch weekend. There's a PGR3 advert that makes it look stunning.

Caught the tail end of PD0 ad that looked average.

ive seen now a fair few ads for xbox360 the pgr ad got me wanting the 360 more because of the graphics
    and the fifa2006.
But id say wait till mid january up to the ps3 and the ads will be all over the place.
Personally ive decided not to get the XB360 untill Halo3 is out.
