Recvering data from corrupt hard disk

About a year ago my Time 30GB machine crashed with message Fatal Error in boot sector. No amount of effort could get it to work again. IT experts in work told me it was dead. I still have a number of pictures and sounds 'trapped' in this machine, and wonder is there any way to get them out and onto my new machine. Is it possible to take out the 30 GB HD and put it in a case and connect it as an external hard drive. Could I then copy over my pics and music, then format it for use as extra storage.
Can this be done? How do I do it? Does it needs a power supply? Could it connect like a USB memory stick (albeit a very big one!)?

Yor best option is to slave the drive off your existing one and see if you can copy the data across. You can try putting it in the freezer or shaking it but these methods are a bit far fetched. If you cant see the data from another drive
    your pretty much snookered.

If the drive is dead its dead, the only way to get data off it is to send it to experts and pay lots of moeny :).
