Well technically the Evil Dead is a video nasty so I'll go for that. Although video nasties are usually little known ultra violent films, but its transcended that. I have a feeling I won't be alone in my choice.

I think the best films on the video nasty list are The Evil Dead and Cannibal Holocaust. And I love them both dearly. Stunning films. Last House on the Left is up there too, but it's more of an important film then a good one.

A lot of the films are pure muck. The Beyond, Blood Feast, Cannibal Ferox, Cannibal Terror, The House By The Cemetery, Living Dead At Manchester Morgue, Nightmares In A Damaged Brain, Tenebrae, Zombie Creeping Flesh and Zombie Flesh Eaters are all decent and well worth watching though.

Is "The Last House On The Left" any good? Heard mixed things about it!

Tenebrae is another very good one on that list.

But yes, most of them are pretty bad films...

    wtf is a 'video nasty'?
I haven't heard that phrase used since the 80's ... I was under the impression it was either dodgy porn or snuff movies... seeing Evil Dead on the list has me even more puzzled.

    wtf is a 'video nasty'?.
    Good ol' Wikipedia...
Video nasty was a term coined in the United Kingdom in the 1980s that originally applied to a number of films distributed on video that were held by some to be unfit for domestic viewing. Many of these "video nasties" were low-budget horror films produced in Italy and the United States. The furor created by the moral crusade against video nasties led to the introduction of the Video Recordings Act 1984 which imposed a stricter code of censorship on videos than was required for cinema release. Several major studio productions ended up being banned on video, falling foul of legislation that was designed to control the distribution of video nasties.

It's an effective film... It's quite strange... Partly really grim, but then there's a whole plotline involving the police that borders on farce. It's got a very low production value and questionable acting. But it's important. It pushes the boundaries of cinema a great deal. It's one of those films that you feel a bit dirty watching... It has a genuine sense of dread about it, nothing about it seems false. The Virigin Spring storyline is a good one and even if it's not handled brilliantly it's essential viewing if you have any interest in the history of either Wes Craven or of extreme cinema. The current UK edition is still cut incidentally. It has some excellent extra features* though, courtesy of Mark Kermode.

    * also features bizaare feature about David Hess trying to flog his odd music to people based on him being in the film.

Did 'the list' ever actually apply to Ireland?

It's only recently that Ireland has been considered a different region to the UK. While we have always had our own Film Board all videos were produced for the UK and that included Ireland (which is why they used to use British classifications on tapes over here). So while the list didn't apply to Ireland in theory, in practice the videos just weren't available.

Was'nt actually a video nasty but more a nasty in a video was that scene in Irreversible with the extinguisher.

'The Last House on the Left' is absolutely terrible. What killed the film for me was the 'funny' antics of the two cops. What on earth was Craven thinking?

'Inferno' and 'Tenebre' are probably the two best films on the list.

Argento is a bit hit and miss with me. I love Tenebrae but quite disliked Inferno.

No, different films. I think they were made the same year or somethin tho. Cannible Holocaust is absolutely nuts!

I've seen a good few of these films and have about 8 of them on DVD. Some are great and others are just complete muck. I've been dying to see Flesh for Frankenstein for quite awhile now but can't bring myself to pay the money for a criterion disc.

I have that flick Delirium which is an italian serial killer flick. The film has 2 completely different cuts of the film on the disc I have. Really interesting looking at the original and the one re-cut for american audiences with vietnam scenes thrown in.

Bad movie, to be sure. But it had a lot of potential - the screenplay is outstanding. Shame the ball was dropped by some messy directing. And Krug is probably the greatest bad guy ever created.

is that film SS Hell Camp anything like Ilsa She Wolf of the SS??

Cannible Holocaust is a better movie than I'd imagine people give it credit for, and if you can, get the cut without the animal killings, they did nothing for the film, and actually took away from the flow of it.

When I heard my mates talking about Cannibal Holocaust I thought it was going to be this absolutely horrible movie but I watched it and it wasnt, it was just a very average movie. I found it fairly boring tbh

Dawn of the dead ( original and uncut )

Twasn't a video nasty. Which version do you mean by uncut? There's three available (in one very sexy R1 set) Romero's original, a "director's cut" which is longer but not actually Romero's preferred version and Dario Argento's entirely seperately edited Italian version. Argento's pumps up the gore, softens the plot a little and adds a new soundtrack.

Im not asure which version but it basically shows everything in it, the scene in the hotel with the guys head exploding and especially at the end when the raiders attack they all get ripped apart, if it isn't a video nasty film its really gory.

i agree some parts of it were boring but some of it was rather quite disturbing.... for instance the scene where is shows a native with a spike ramed up the body? the body looks real and i was wondering if it was real or not.
