what processes are running? you should try and minimise these

run msconfig to check which processes autostart

    [edit spelling]

    Its not the processes.

Sounds like your machine has got some bad stuff on it, More then likely a Re-install of windows will do the job. Possible full of spyware etc.. What kind of PC is it ?

yes possibly full of spyware "processes"

reinstall... thats last resort, not first suggestion before you even ask questions

why do noobs insist on attempting to give advice?

Excuse me, Do not insult me like that. How dare you..

That is not acceptable. I can guarentee you, this guy wont get this sorted any other way then a fresh install. It may be corrupted, or missing drivers which can be a typical problem... Adding USB Card's without propper driver support can cause windows Shut down problem's as I have experienced on my machines or other machines I have fixed.

the guy has written 2 sentences about his problem, so upon what assumptions are you basing that guarantee on?

...something about assumptions being the mother of all somethings

I am speaking from past experiences Mate... Has happend to me, you know. I do deal with alot of computers / Week. Too bad you don't know me. Sounds like he has bunged it all up tbh and a Fresh install will fix the job and sort alot out for him.

There was no need for what you said In your post above. :(

It was not like your advice was perticularily Expert advice : " run msconfig to check which processes autostart " To any normal PC user, That means nothing to them. Spyware doesnt Always show up in Msconfig > Startup. It doesnt nessecarily have to run as a proccess, Nor does any kind of Trojan/Virus. And in most cases, Software like norton won't fix Errors like this in Windows .dll's .
Also, Cutting your Normal processes upon startup, down to a lower number, Isn't exactly going to increase your shutdown time from 5-10 mins to 15 seconds like what it should be, as Processes Can be practically Cut instantly, Where as if you have a bogey Process/service running, This may halt the shutdown time of the system as the computer Tries to end it.

Bounty - there's no need to assume that you are all knowing and that everyone is a "noob". HungryJoey took time to give advice, which is not incorrect - a reinstall nearly always works - thats all he said "more then likely a Re-install of windows will do the job". He didnt say that was the OP's only option now, did he?

    Anyway, back to the problem...
Any idea how big a page file you have? I doubt thats the issue, but as windows takes about a minute to clear my page file its a pain in the backside!
    How many processes are running?

Go to www.ewido.net and download the program, it's excellent (14day trial though)
Also go here: http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner and run the online virus scan (wont fix your problems, just tell you if you have any).
Next, download Spybot, adaware, spyware doctor etc and scan with all to check your system for spyware.

How does the general performance of the PC seem? Has it slowed down alot recently?
When was the last time you defragmented?

You can hardly tell give out to someone for giving non-novice-friendly advice by telling them to use msconfig, when you tell them to reformat their PC.

It's a hell of a lot harder to do a proper re-format than it is to run msconfig.

The usual suspects for this problem are the following:
    1. rogue process that a system halt is unable to stop
    2. virus/trojan that is keeping open the network connection, which causes the system to wait before shuting down
    3. hardware fault, not recognising the halt signal, thus Windows waits
    4. spyware
    5. corrupt installation, after various program removals that remove certain system files and alter registry

The easiest way to start the process of ellimination is to download the free Microsoft Antispyware program, install and run a deep scan. It will find various spyware processes, remove them. Do this first as it will give you a clean system to work from.

Then try a reboot, if not any better, right mouse click 'My Computer' choose 'Manage'. Open up the folder on the left called 'Event Viewer', then 'System' This will show all system events, those marked with a white cross in a red circle are serious errors. Double click them to view the error, there is a hyper link in them to take you to a Microsoft site ti interpret the messages usually very usefull. Check the 'Application' log too. Any errors will be triggered and shown in these logs.

If you are not getting very far with all this and you feel yourself getting out of your depth, the quickest way to fix it is to reinstall windows. You will loose a lot of data and will have to reinstall all your applications again, but you will have a clean system again. The best thing that you can do after that is to Ghost your system and save the image onto a DVD or external hard drive, to use at a later date when your system goes phut again. Ghost is about €80.

Whatever way you choose to fix this, you will learn plenty, which will help you the next time...yes there will be a next time!!!
