purchasing managers/directors on the take

A former colleague is now working for a US co. where the head honchos in the purchasing dept are on the take...

Backhanders from suppliers, etc. They would be doing millions of pounds worth of business every year.

Obviously this makes it tough for prospective new suppliers to get a look in or to get their foot in the door.

I have to say we have encountered it before...in large corporates.

We are not naive, but am curious to find out if others have come up against these types of vested interests before?

Define backhanders. Actually recieving money or just getting christmas hampers from clients.

If it's the latter then yes, I know a lot. :)

Xmas hampers and the odd gift are the norm - I dont think anyone would dispute that.

Backhanders are a different matter altogether - essentially a bribe paid into an account to ensure they continue buying from that supplier - even if this means upping the purchase price and doctoring figures to make sure it looks like theirs was the lowest price.

Ahh, in that case, I've not come across that level of corruption in this country. Small little corruptions (a la hampers, golf trips etc) sure, but not "cuts of the profit" or similar.
