There's a travel board you'd be better off posting on.

And read the charter before Ruthie schmacks you 'round the head!

    hehe :)

I've never been on a J1, I'm planning on going to New York next summer (ie. not the summer coming, the following one).

Everyone who's posted about it says that it was the best summer of their lives!

I was on a J1 in San Francisco over the summer. I actually lived in Berkeley which is a small city beside San Francisco. Its about 20 mins away on the train.

Berekely is where all the Irish J1 people live. Basically since its a college town and all the students have gone home there's plenty of accomadation. Its a very nice and relaxing place. Its also slightly warmer than San Francisco.

I lived in a frat house with about 20 Irish people. The house was huge, 3 stories. Rent is pretty cheap if you're sharing your room with friends. Some people don't like to go over to the states to live with Irish people but I have to say I had the best summer ever. I was drinking and partying nearly every single day. There's always a party going on somehwere in Berkeley. Since I was under 21 I wouldn't have been able to do that had I lived in SF city and tbh it wouldn't have been as fun. If you do want to avoid the Irish then get a place in SF rather than Berkeley.

San Francisco itself is a fantastic place. Its possibly the nicest city in the US. I could easily see myself living there sometime. The only problem was we couldn't get work because we were late going out. Try your best to get work before you go. Construction and furniture removal pay very well. Once you get out there go to Berkeley and call up to the frat houses(they have greek letters over the door) and ask if they have rooms. You'll find somewhere eventually. Bring plenty of cash to tie you over in case you find it hard to get work or a place to live,

I absolutely loved it. I'm thinking of going back again this summer. Anyway if you have anymore questions just ask.

Going over on a J1 this year myself, going to new york though. Haven't booked anything yet and just wondering if anyone knows who the best to go with is. So far it looks like either usit or sayit are the best, anyone got any suggestions on who to book with? The only real difference is that sayit say you can have extra stopovers, does that mean you basically get a free internal flight or what???

wel i booked with usit last friday and in doing so got 100 bucks off but friday was the ast day of the offer. thanks david for your comments! soundswell sweet, ill forward this on to my friends. Berkley sounds pretty sweet. was wondering if ye managed to doing any road trips or anything like that. appartently its cheap to rent a car and drive across the border for a weekend in mexico??

also i wont be 21 until the second half of the summer so cheers for tellings me bout all the parties as that was what i was hoping it would be like! roll on june now i cant wait for the sun and the beaches!!

I couldn't go travelling because I ran out of money but everyone I was living with did(and loved it). They went to Yosemite National Park, LA, Vegas San Diego and Mexico. From what I could gather renting a car isn't too bad if there's a few of you. It beats sitting on a bus or train for 14 hours anyway.

Btw I wouldn't get too excited about the beaches, they're nothing special in SF. You'd have to go further south for them. You could always do that if you wanted.

Btw start looking for work soon!

I was in New York last summer , had a deadly time , I was not on J1 so found it hard enough to get work but the work I did get paid really well (400 bucks for one night wating at a wedding) but I had 2800 dollars for 2 months and that paid for rent in a apartment in brooklyn and had to pay for the flight back and I was partying 4 nights a week maybe more.Drinking over there is pretty easy to get a mate of mine was only 19 and he never got turned away from any pub and he looks bout 17 i guess the accent does alot.

For jobs/ apartments I would check out craigslist.com try and sublet a place. as you rent a place you have to get the furniture by your self.

If i was to go again I would stay in the Bronx lots of Irish there espically in yonkers alot easier to get a job there id say.

David 19 I am thinking bout going to San Fran is it easy to stay in Berkeley and work in San Fran , I should have a moving job lined up, How much would a ticket cost ?Those frat houses sound deadly to me how much would rent be and would you pay a deposit? I think it might be harder to rent since what those dublin fu(ker$ did last summer to there apartment.

Sorry for hi jacking the thread but I think these questions might help every one. Any questions about new york just ask.

    Hi everyone!

Does anyone know what are the chances of getting work in San Fran for the summer without a visa. I would be willing to do anything, but where do I start!!!

    Help needed! Thanks

Do you really need to raise two 4 year old threads from the dead to ask teh same question?
