    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054860289

was thinking of getting somethign like this instead of buyinga pc 2nd hand

Mostly just used for college work, preparing classess, WP, spreadsheets, surfing, and a bit of music

(though I should do a bit more on the pc!!! )

What I wanna know is it silly to be buying a celeron ?
I'd love some one t o give me an idea of the difference in performance between p4 and celeron, in non tech terms if you know what I mean?

    appreciated

In non-tech terms: The celeron's just slower. If you're going to be doing fairly standard stuff like that, then it's perfect for you.

thanx for that, think I might buy it and then sell on to a student if I go for somethign more.... fun (but if I played games I'd do nothing else)
basically don't liek that everything is on the lappie (and small portable hardddrive ) was gonna get external harddrive etc, but at this price it might be more practical (also would work at a desk instead of onthe couch like now)

    2 silly questions

    1. does it need a network card for me to link it to the lappie?
    2. does it need a modem (not included in price, v92 is 20 euro), I've broadband from chorus , I'd of thought the little box thingy (to be technical) was external modem ?

I really appreciate the reply, boards has been a great help in past, not least at saving money, and a little education on the way :)

You dont need a network card to connect an external HD to a laptop.. just the USB ports which come as standard..

the modem your talking about sounds like a dialup modem.. you wont need this if you have Broadband from Chorus..

However you may need the network card to use the Chorus Broadband modem... not too sure about that.. maybe someone else can verify? is the Chorus modem USB supported as well as ethernet?

Network cards are cheap as chips. You'd pick one up for a tenner on ebay. Not sure about the chorus modem, but I think it does work with USB (my boss mentioned that before).

www.marxcomputers.ie do a 10/100 card brand new for a tenner, €20 if you want gigabit.

For laptop you could get a €22 10/100 pcmcia card
a crossover cable would set you back another €6

alternatively you could get a usb transfer cable for 23 - but I do not know if you could share internet via it.

    or 35 for a gigibit pcmcia card - /me wants /me wants
    - could make cloning a wee bit faster.
    ( gigabit from desktop to laptop = 20 +6 +35 = € 61 )
