Using a Flash

I decided to invest in a flash for my SLR because well I wanted one, as one does. It's a Centon FG30D for anyone who's interested. Cheap enough one but fairly feature full. I'll just list of the specs anyway. Automatic dedication (Pentax - not sure this works on my camera), 2 Auto Exposure Settings, 4 position bounce, 3 step zoom, GN 21m, swivel, wide angle diffuser.

Anyway... I'm coming from using built in flashes that "just work" so this is all fairly new to me. I somewhat get the basics but there's lots I'm unsure of. It suggests different things for different lenses (the 3 zoom positions are wide, normal and tele). The auto exposures are for different distances basically (yellow nearer and blue farther).

Should I be worrying at all about how a place is lit - i.e. if it's within yellow distance should I just set it at the f/stop it suggests, put it at 1/125 (my camera sync speed) and then shoot away? ... I'm almost thinking I'm asking nothing here. I'd sorta gotten used to trusting the lighting meter on my camera and I'm starting to feel a little lost. :p

Any general thoughts/suggestions related to flash photography would be welcome also...

Note: I am probably too tired to make this post coherent, apologies.
