Dual disc issue

I'm using a laptop and have a regular DVD/CD drive (where you clip the disk on, if you know what I mean).
I got a dualdisc album today and I can't get it to play on it. The CD works fine on a regular player or my xbox (they both have the same kind of tray drive). The DVD side works fine on my laptop (and my girlfriends) but when I try and clip the CD in it doesn't seem to sit right, and even when I force it (gently of course) and it seems to clip in properly the CD player still won't even recognise that there's a disc in the drive.

Is this standard of dualdiscs (it says on the back that the audio side of the the disc does not conform to CD specs and therefore will not play on some CD and DVD players), or did I just get a faulty copy?

Sounds like the audio side of it has some retarded copy protection system that breaks the usual audio cd standard (bet it doesn't have a "Compact Disc" logo on it), thus its not guaranteed to play on all devices.

    What CD is it?

Record companies that use these techniques deserve to have their stuff pirated. Twats.

yeah, no Compact Disc logo on it, reading up it seems to be because it doesn't fit CD spec. Idiots.

It's Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine, and here was me thinking I'd be better off getting the dualdisc version (same price on play as the regular), I'll remember not to bother in future.

Now to get it on my ipod I need to bring it into college, use a standard slot loading drive on a pc there, copy to a cd using WMP and bring it home to my laptop. Either that or download, but at least my way I'll certainly get decent sound quality.

Any other ways to get a dualdisc on my mp3 player?

I just got the new Bruce Springsteen one and have the same problem. It plays fine in my CD player but not in my PC's tray. The DVD side works ok.

I've tried ripping the tracks from the DVD with DVD Decrypter. The VOB files play perfectly in Nero Showtime but they're obviously too big! I've tried converting the VOBs to mp3s using BeLight but the tracks produced have loud static over the music.

I don't have access to any computers with CD drives different to mine.

    Any suggestions?

AnyDVD has an option to remove audio cd protection on the fly....give that a try.
Or use a Mac or a linux box to rip the contents.

Imho, thoses cds are sold faulty and you should bring it back.

Yeah, didn't expect this hassle. Could have gone for the two disc option but this sounded better.

The drive won't read the CD at all. Acts like it's empty.

I think I'll just source the mp3s elsewhere...

No idea what protection is on there but I know one was defeated by simply holding down shift for a few seconds when you insert the disc. (Holding shift disables autorun on a cd)

Worth a try if you haven't tried that already?
