There was a build up of ice on the top shelf of the freezer in my refrigertor, I got a knife and tried to knock it off. While doing so I knocked a small hole in the top of the freezer causing a rush of air for about 20 seconds then it stopped. I don't know if I have damaged it or what the air came out was, it felt like ice though. Has anybody any ideas or can they point me in the direction to get help.

    Your fridge is now scrap.
The refrigerant has leaked out possibly contributing to the hole in the Ozone layer.
Go and buy a new one before all your food goes rotten.

Do you have any idea whether it will just be the freezer or the entire fridge that's gone. The hole was only tiny, would that still be enough to have totally destroyed it?

    Just a tip
When you get your new fridge/freezer there should be a small plastic spatula with it.
This is what the manufacturer wants you to use to defrost the freezer.
It will greatly enhance the life of your fridge.
Oh and yes once all the magic gas is gone the fridge will cease to function, it will make all the right noises but will not cool down.

    Very good.

Thanks for the help guys, I never knew it was that easy to wreck a fridge. I didn't put much force at all behind the knife.

You have just contributed to the melting of the Polar Ice cap.

But seriously, as was said the Fridge is FUCXED!

Yes, the refrigerant has leaked. No, the fridge is not necessarily scrap.

Pull it out from the wall and take a look at the back, there'll be one or two large black pots (aka compressors) fitted. If you've only one, then all the refrigerant has leaked, if you've two, well then you've only fecked the freezer!

On the pot(s) there'll be a label. Chances are it's Danfoss, check the label to see if it's R600 or R134a. R600 range is butane or propane, Kenco in Glasnevin might be able to sort you out. If it's R134a any fridge contractor will be able to - but it won't be cheap, again Kenco (or any appliance repair outfit) might be your best bet.

TBH it the fridge is more than 2 years old, even it's easily fixable I wouldn't bother, long term you'd be btter off buying a new one compared to the repair cost.

    Best of luck.

Many things are repairable including most appliances etc that end up in the rubbish, my point is that it is so expensive to fix anything now that regardless or it's fixability it just gets binned= scrap.
Personally I find it disgusting that there is so much waste and reluctance to fix things, I heard that there was one shop in Dublin that used to fix radios, appliances etc but the owner grew old and retired earlier this year.

Is this somthing i should be worried about and is there anyway to replace the lost gas

Since its a work fridge you should report this to get it inspected. Food needs to be stored at the correct temperature.

The fridge might work now but may not in a few months.
