HD TV over satellite ?

Is anyone aware of non-Sky provision of HDTV in Europe ?

My knowledge is limited - as far as I've been able to find out Sky are releasing a HD PVR and the BBC are going to have HD broadcasts available via that system.

Are there non-UK broadcasters putting content onto satellite that can be viewed in Ireland? If so, are there systems out there now that would allow me to view this ?

The reason for my questions are twofold:
    1. I'm tempted to get a HD TV now that I've got an Xbox360 but might wait until I get another AV source before taking the plunge.
    2. I have only heard of services being made available via Sky and since there are obviously other companies out there I reckon it's worth investigating.

Premiere in Germany, in addition, Pro7 and Sat.1 are both going to (or already have?) free HDTV - although theres talk of all Pro7.Sat.1 channels, including Kabel eins, etc, going encrypted on digital in 2007 or so.

Hellas are also planning a HDTV service I believe.

They are all waiting for new chips of a varient of MPEG4. Only current TX are only tests (nearly 20 channels).

A 2GHz to 3GHz PC can just about do SW decoding (from Skystar1 etc) of current transmissions. Then you ideally feed a 1920 x 1080 at least video projector for a 4ft to 8ft picture...

There is some doubt that any current PC in Software can handle the new standard. New PC cards that have the decoder chip for MPEG4 are on the way too. They also are awaiting supplies of chip.

So the Direct to Home "real" service is delayed. Seemingly Sky & BBC has got it rght waiting till next year to launch.

Those German Pay TV customers who have already expressed an interest in HDTV will be on priority list for initial supplies of set boxes.
