depends on the lens in question and what your idea of how important lens quality is, do you print large prints and notice minor corner sharpness?

read the lens reviews at www.dpreview.com www.photo.net and http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/index.shtml and do a google for a load of other independant lens review sites

if it makes you feel any better.. I have two Sigma lenses on a 20D (24-70 & 10-20) and regularly print at 12x8 and 16x12. I've even gone up to 30x20 with a few and the prints have been great. I'm saving my money by buying Sigma's, might start a collection of Canon L's when photography makes me a regular income.

Nearly all my published shots have been taken with Sigma lenses on a Canon (30v or 10d). Until you're looking extremely high-end they'll do an admirable job, in my opinion.

All depends what you're comparing. An expensive Sigma will beat a cheap Canon lens and vice versa. Generally, the expensive Canon lenses are very expensive, very heavy and very good quality. The cheap Canon lenses are very cheap, very light and poor quality.

The reviews on fredmiranda.com are also quite good.
