HD v's SD

I set up the 360 with the RGB SCART to my SD (100hz) 30" WS TV. I was playing Project Gothem 3. It certainly looked very good, but not a whole lot better than the original X-Box. The image was much clearer, but there is still difficulty seeing into the distance (road ahead) because of some liasing. Graphics-wise, I would say the difference between the X-BOX and X-Box 360 on an SD TV is about the same as that between the PS2 and original X-Box.

How much imporvement would I see with a HD TV? The one I would get (which would replace the 36") would be a Samsung 40" WS LCD Display.

    Any thoughts,
    Thanks

Games look way better with HD-TV, I think that a HD-TV is required to get the true experience from any Xbox 360 game.

Yeah a 360 in SD barely looks better than Xbox.
In HD its truly 'next gen' though.
It will make a huge difference.

The 360 in SD looks alot better than anything the Xbox could do. To get they full effect you will need a HDTV.

I got my XBOX 360 today and cant wait for my HDTV to be delivered in the morning.

I have HD TV... but I can't find the VGA cable for sale anywhere... very annoying.

But if you play a game like Kameo you'll notice a huge difference between what the Xbox and the Xbox 360 can do even in SD. The sheer amount of stuff that is going on on screen is amazing.... and it loads really quickly as well... It's got a similiar look to Fable, except it's frame rate is perfect and it loads huge areas super quick.

played 4 launch titles on my mates 42" plasma, very impressive indeed.
The games look much much better, hard to describe without everyone having seen one running on one.
To explain, normally on a plasma a picture in SD looks quite unpleasant, due to various artifacts of the process needed to expand the picture up to the native HD display of the set. When playing HD the picture is pin-sharp, so clear, normally to watch a SD picture playing on the set in comfort you need a good bit of distance between you and the display due to the aforementioned processing artifacts, but with the 360 in HD, wow, it looks great whatever distance, flawless, the jump in fidelity is truely a next gen leap akin to the one between the PS1 and xbox. Very impressive.
Has to be said though, on an ordinary TV, as I am most of the time, it does just look like a slightly better, smoother lastgen game, I mean Quake 4 is only a bit better looking than Doom3, maybe a bit smoother, on a HD set the differences are obvious, but on an ordinary set little improvement is visible, Halflife2 also beats most of the launch titles hands down, as long as you are on a SD set, of course gameplay considerations are not taken into account, although it would be hard for anything on the 360 to compete with such a giant of the gaming world.

yes when running PGR3 in 1080i , looks amazing
and most games will now be a minimum of 720p and 1080i also , and running 5.1 through the digital out , so have to say it was worth every penny :D

Something I noticed when I plugged my 360 into my hdtv using the vga cable is that it gave me a selection of different resolutions to choose above and below 720p. It looked great at 1024x768 and 1280x768 and various other resolutions so why not just get a €300 lcd monitor if you wanna see what it can do but can't splash out on a large hd screen?

Presumably if you get the needed cable you should be sorted, hey, affordable HD for everyone!

Maybe not that setting exactly but you'll get something that will be close to Hi Def.

Hi im very curious about the new xbox. Undoubtly it has the power but i just cant afford a hd tv to admire the visuals. Will lcd monitors work as a hd tv? Could someone please explain? Are vga cables easy to come by?

    Yea and yes,

Strip any HD-TV down and you will see it's just a fancy monitor anyway with a wider screen (just not inc the tuner and some AV stuff)
All the stors that sell the new xbox 'should' sell the VGA cable too.
    and yes it does work!

Thanx m8. Any advice on 17" lcds? any pitfalls or are they all basically the same?

Try to look for something with a low(er) response time, the lower the better but really a 15ms will work just fine. I use a Samsung Syncmaster 710MP (with built in TV thuner) and it handles anything my PC, Xbox and 360 can throw at it.

    You'd think, wouldn't you?

I can't find one anywhere... they're sold out on amazon and play.com as well.

and they're going for crazy prices on eBay.

If you know of any stores that have them then please let me know.
