    Hi,

Whats the story with getting a DVD player that plays both PAL + NTSC formats? Are they widely available and how much extra should I be expected to pay?

    Cheers.

It's not really PAL vs NTSC. Some 'DVD' players will not play DVDs from another region. It's usually possible to fix them so they can play all DVDs. In order to fix my DVD player, I searched the web and found an ISO to burn and play on the DVD player. It now is able to play all DVDs. So you might be able to fix any DVD player.

In my opinion any non-multi-region DVD player is false advertising.

There's no such thing as a PAL or NTSC DVD player - it's the TV that's PAL or NTSC. All DVD players will play them but whether or not your TV can display it properly is the issue. afaik all new tvs will play both without any hassle (widescreen ones at least).

As for Regional coding - America is Region 1, Europe 2 etc. Nearly all dvd players sold in this country are hard coded for a particular region. But most of them can be flashed, chipped or have a secret code to change it to region free. Don't pay any extra for a region-free one and don't get a Sony one - they're the worst.

Lidl and Aldi regularly do region free dvd players. Marx Computer do a DVD/Divx player for about €60 that has a secret menu for changing it to Region free - I have one and it's great.
