Transport in the Budget

Looking at the Buget today I am delighted to see that Transport21 is being given the money it was promised and although we got a repeat of Spencer Dock, the cash is there for it now as well as the Kildare Route and Cherrywood Luas extention. Cowan also made tax relief available for Park and Rides. It just goes to show you how public transport and commuting is at the forefront of the poltical agenda these days.

I was simply delighted to see that the Western Rail Corridor got no money other than some planning and study money and more importantly that the tax breaks for rural and one off houses are being phased out while at the same time tax breaks will be used to encourage more people to live in towns over shops. These developments are very important as they will lead to further population growth in regional towns and make rail transport (and public transport in general) outside the cities, much more viable and will do more to create an intelligent momentum towards some the WRC reopening one day for the right reasons. Right now the WRC is a joke and will destroy the image of rail investment if reopened before badly needed rail commuter projects.

I did not see, but were there any tax relief for railfreight? I seem to recall that railfreight supporters have been looking for this for years now. Did it get included? On a similar matter, I had to laugh at the truckers demanding Cullen be sacked because they did not get a huge decrease in the price of diesel. Oh the poor victims...
