I don't think they had much choice to be honest. Charlie brought this in a few years ago and the European Commision have been writing letters ever since trying to get Bertie to scrap it. There's no doubting it, it will have a big impact...how big we're gonna have to wait and see.

However, Cowan did make the comment that he is looking at other incentives that could be implemented in 2008 -- incentives which would be in accordance with EU law. So "same as it ever was" apparently.

Betting Tax also got reduced to 1% and that will be most likely be absorbed by the bookies now.

    Paddy Power happy with Budget
07/12/2005 - 17:38:19 Paddy Power punters all over Ireland are toasting Brian Cowen tonight as the Minister for Finance has effectively put the final nail in the betting tax coffin.

Paddy Power punters all over Ireland are toasting Brian Cowen tonight as the Minister for Finance has effectively put the final nail in the betting tax coffin.

The Minister announced in his budget speech that betting tax would be reduced to just 1% on July 1 nest year.

Paddy Power said: “This is the best news punters have had since Frankie Dettori rode his seven winners at Ascot, and for once the bookies are happy too!"

"It’s not meant to come into effect until next July, but we’re an impatient bunch at Paddy Power, and there’s no way we can wait that long. Every Paddy Power shop will be tax free in the morning!”
