"Media Player Classic" should be a good place to start. MP4 is a container format, so the codec used inside it can vary. You can try installing Xvid or Divx codecs as they're sometimes packaged in MP4 files.

    Combined Community Codec Pack

    or

    Nero Showtime

Both will work but Nero Showtime is far easier to setup correctly!

    Stay away from Apple Quicktime!
    Why?
Too bloaty and FULL of crap you may not need if you only require the codec to view MP4's.

Use QuicktimeAlternative if you must...but its already included with CCCP(Combined Community Code Pack) and it TOTALLY free!
