OS X not mounting disks

Having a bit of a problem here.

OS X completely died on me last night and refused to start up again. So I booted from the CD and reinstalled OS X 10.3.

But now it doesn't seem to want to mount any sort of disk, which is a problem as I want to back up everything before I send this thing off to be repaired.

Anyone got any suggestions? The Firewire and USB hard drives I've tried with it all show up under the system profile, they're just not mounting.

    Do this first:

Macintosh HD / Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility

Select your start up disk and select "Repair permissions".

Once that is done it's maybe a good advice to install the latest update, like 10.3.9 in your case. But download the Combined Update from Apple's website. And of course, all security updates.

If that doesn't help, I have no idea yet.

    I tried all that...

I actually have it back at the moment. I had to restart the system a few times to get it right.

I think it's on it's last legs at the moment, so I'm just going to back everything up while I can and then see if I can get it serviced.

    Have you done this?:
Turn on the mac pressing apple+s until you see an all text screen.
    type: /sbin/fsck -fy
if any problem found retype it, until there's not more errors
    type: reboot

This, together with repair permissions is the best way to fix the file system.
