Definitely B&H. I'm off there in the new year so tell me how it goes. You won't get better prices this side of the Atlantic.

don't go to ritepricecamera.com I have heard they are terrible. they presurise people into buying things and have pulled all sorts of stunts to make people pay more than they actually should.

search for ritepricecamera.com on google and you will read some horror stories. i dont know if they are only an online store or if they have a shop also, but theyre based in new york. remmeber to bring the camera on the plane in your hand luggage and put the box and manuals in your main suitcase, incase you get stung for excise duty :)

hmm.You could still get stopped with your luggage so i wouldn't bring the box back at all. Unless you want to post them home from NewYork.

B+H for sure, stay away from the the mulitude of 'bargain' camera stores you will find around time square, I think their based on the 'what you see is what you get' system, body only in other words, you may find that you just get the camera,no battery, manual leads etc. They will all cost extra.

B+H are very reputable from what I understand. New York seems to be the epicentre for these types of scams.

I was in NY last month and I bought some gear in B&H. I found the staff very knowledgeable and helpful. They certainly seem to have specialists in every area I was interested in. I was never in a shop that was as organised as this.
BTW they said that they had a lot of Irish customers ove Halloween.

Thanks for all your replies. I will deffinately be going to B+H. I am interested in the following camera.
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT (350D). Seems to have some good reviews.
On the B+H website it is selling for $800 approx. I assume this is a good price. Any comments.

that's a great price, cheapest I can find delivered on the net is 799 euro so in dollars you'll make a saving on that plus you're buying in a shop so ya get it into your hand. I just paid for mine and I have to wait 2 weeks for delivery

just beware that the courier is going to charge you 21% VAT plus some processing charges for charging you 21%. You could get it sent by the USPS, but you've no insurance in case of loss or damage...
Being asked for EUR200 definitely dented some of my enthusiasm when I got my 300D a couple years ago..

Bought within the EU so I wont have to pay full duty, german site so I might have to pay the extra 5% which will only be 50 euro max

Not a bad price, but dont forget, you'll get stung for NY State sales tax (8.375%) so that's another 70 odd dollars

As others have said B&H is the place to go. Bring ID with you can they will drop the state sales tax. Also remember that they don't open on a Saturday.

I am just back from the states and I purchased a D50 base body in B+H for Eur 624. (Like a dumb ass, I had no ID and could have got this for 8% less) This included 1gb of memory but excluded the lenses as I can use my old Nikon 35mm lenses with the D50. I did not realise this before I spoke with the guys in B&H and this saved me quite a few bob as I was going to buy the 350D (same package but incl 18-55mm lense) for approx Eur 900.
I went to another shop called JR's, but all they were interested in was my money and gave me little or no advice on the cameras I was looking at.
The guys in B&H were more professional and appeared genuinely interested in the questions I was asking. They actually recommended that I buy the Nikon D50 over the 350D even though I was willing to spend Eur 300 more with them.
I have used the D50 with the old 35mm lenses since I came back and the picture quality is excellent. I could not be happier.

On a side note, NY is a great place. I will be going back.
