I havent been able to connect since 5:30pm this evening. My sync and ready lights are on and steady but no matter what I do I cannot connect.

I have disabled, rebooted , enabled and tried 2 different computers and "the network cannot assign an IP address to my computer"

    any ideas?

I Live in Lucan and the nice girl from NTL said she will ask in the morning if there is a problem in my area

Edit I am using dial up IOL free in case you are wondering how i am on the internet at all

start >> control panel >> network connections >> right click on Local Area Connection that has the message and properties >> remove tick from box which says notify me when this ..................

that is what we tell people to do at work and it does the job for most people who call in

The cable modem is not connecting properly so DHCP is not working. Leave computer on and connected.

Power off and on the modem.

When lights all go to the noermal try again.

Check DHCP or get address by:
    Win NT, Win 2000, XP
    Start Run CMD
    ipconfig /renew

Are you connecting via Ethernet or USB - if Ethernet do you have a enet light lit on the cable modem?

    from www.microsoft.com

You may receive a "Limited or no connectivity" message on a computer that is connected to the Internet by a DSL modem or a cable modem after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2
View products that this article applies to.
    Article ID : 892896
    Last Review : July 13, 2005
    Revision : 2.2
    SYMPTOMS
After you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 on a computer that is connected to the Internet by a digital subscriber line (DSL) modem or by a cable modem, you may receive a message that is similar to the following message when you try to connect to the Internet:
Limited or no connectivity: The connection has limited or no connectivity. You might not be able to access the Internet or some network resources.
You may also receive error message 678 or error message 769.
    CAUSE
When a Point-to-Point over Ethernet (PPPoE) connection is created in Windows XP, Windows XP creates both a local connection and a broadband connection. Because Windows XP creates the two connections by design, and because the Automatic Private Internet Protocol Addressing (APIPA) address is expected, Windows XP should not indicate that the local connection has limited connectivity.

However, if your computer is not configured as a PPPoE client computer and the computer obtains an APIPA address, that is a situation where limited connectivity exists. Therefore, Windows XP should indicate that the local connection has limited connectivity. For example, this might occur if a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server is not available on your network.

You may also receive this message when one or more of the following conditions are true:
    1. Your DHCP server is down on a hardwired network. On a home network, this server could be your Internet service provider's server, your personal router, or your DHCP provider.
    2. Your DHCP server is down on a wireless network. On a home network, this server could be your ISP's server, your personal router, or your DHCP provider.
    3. On a wireless network, this message may appear when you use an incorrect Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) key or if you do not have a WEP key.
    4. You may not have an IP address, or your TCP/IP settings may be corrupted.
    5. You may be experiencing other issues that are related to your Internet connection.
    WORKAROUND
Sometimes, you may receive this message even if your computer is currently connected to the Internet. To disable the message, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK.
    2. Double-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
    3. On the General tab, click to clear the Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity check box, click OK, and then click Close.
Note This does not resolve an issue. It just turns the message off.

is it possible you are using the wrong type of ethernet cable - ie crossover cable when you should use regular or vice versa?

oh, im sorry, do you have ANY idea what a DHCP is? If the DHCP was not working, NO NTL customer could get online......and since im online, it means you are wrong!

Obviously DHCP generally is working. If *HE* can't connect and get an IP then:
one of the following is true:
    * There is no connection to Cable on cable TV side of Modem.
    * The modem is broken
    * The DHCP is not working on his Modem
    * The Ethernet cable is faulty or wrong kind
    * The network settings either in TCP/IP or adaptor properties are wrong
    * The network adaptor is faulty.
    * his DHCP client service is disabled or Stopped (actually you gget message "RPC failed" or such when doing ipconfig /renew)

If there is no IP address and /renew does not work then for him DHCP is not working. It could be a faulty connector somewhere. It is usually a lack of connectiviity somewhere, rather than an actual DHCP server.

NTL is suffently large that they may have more than one DHCP server. If one was down many thousands would be disconnected.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but just wondering if this problem has been fixed for okcomputer? It seems like I have the same problem at home myself. I try to repair the network connection by right clicking on it and clicking repair, takes a while then failed: Renew the IP address.

I could really do with some help here. I've tried all the turn off computer and modem, turn on modem then computer 30 seconds later and many other combinations. Im in Galway city BTW, so if there is anyone else from Galway using NTL BB could you clarify its not the whole NTL network? Thanks!
