I am new to this part of the forum (usually on the poker forum)

I have a pc and eircom broadband at home. I am about to get a laptop and want to know can I get broadband on it at home without a wire connection. Also can I play poker on laptop while someone else is online on the pc?
The broadband "box" is in the study. Can I now be online on the laptop anywhere in the house. Do I need any extra equipment and do I need to pay eircom more?
Apologies in advance if these questions have already been answered here. Please keep replies simple as I am not very good with technical terms. Many thanks in advance:confused: .

Can you please provide the model/name of the current broadband router/modem ("box")? [Required info. specifically: does it connect to the PC via Ethernet or USB, and how many USB ports does it have. ]
What Operating System(OS) is installed on the PC?

    options:
    - Depending on the info. provided above: you may be able to plug in a Wireless Access Point(AP) into the current router to allow Wireless(WiFi) devices to connect.

    - Otherwise, you can simply purchase a WiFi USB dongle or PCI card -> and assuming the new laptop has WiFi built-in (Otherwise, get a USB dongle or PCMCIA card) - you an use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) -> if your PC OS supports it. [In simpler terms: Laptop connects to PC via WiFi, and uses the PC's Internet connection .. the obvious con is that the PC must be switched on)

    - third option: replace current router with a wireless router/modem/AP combo. (Much neater..not _that_ expensive..)

And, yes, you should still be able to play poker if both machines are in use silmutaneously. You should be able to use the laptop around the house..however, walls and other wireless equipment may cause interference and reduct signal strength/quality..
