VAT + Custom Duty

Hi I am considering buying an mp3 player from B&H online store in the states, i doubt they will be prepared to mark the package down in value or as a gift. It would be shipped by "US Mail - Airmail Parcel Post" at a cost of $35 bringing the total value to $369.95 + $35 = $404.95 (€343). Can anyone tell me exactly how much I would owe in Duty + VAT if this gets caught in the post?
The cheapest I can source the item here on an English website is for €406. So that gives me a cushion of 60euro and I'm wondering if it gets caught if I have anything to lose.

I reckon €77 - 21% + €5 fees, there's a good chance US Mail will get past without charges in my experience.

right thanks, someone else suggested 24% altogether so either way it seems to be worth a gambe!

Are these packages not delivered by the wonderful GLS who will no doubt levy as many charges as possible (along with a service fee)?

Do they have a gift wrapping option? A lot of online sites offer one, if so get it done as there's less chance of customs opening it.

the value of the item will be still marked on the outside though won't it?

It will but customs may see it's gift wrapped and is most likely a present and may let it pass being Christmas and all, they'll assume somebody is being sent a present. There's no guarantees it just lessens the chances of you being caught. I do it all the time when I can and have never been caught for Customs charges, whether the gift wrapping makes a difference or not I can't say for sure.

I got stung for this before. You could be in for a nasty surprise.

For a 45 dollar DVD boxset I got charged just over 30 euro.

Basically the duty/tax was only about 12 euro but they then charge you for collecting it and then levy VAT on that!

So basically I paid about 65% tax on the item. Never again.
