tried several times through out the day but no luck..
the hard disk is being accessed but it's not being seen as a valid bootable drive !!
    all suggestions welcome.

remove all additional hardware and disks.
    restore BIOS defaults.
try to boot (and check BIOS - is there anything list next to Primary Master..?)

checked that,...hard drive is seen as correct type in bios,
I have since found out that my son was streaming a video
today from one those funny video sites when the screen
suddenly went blue and a message flashed up saying something
    about memory.
My Norton anti virus is up to date so I'm kinda ruling out a virus
    but one never knows.

    hmmm.
Without hardware attached (BTW, Have you ever added RAM?),etc. can you boot into Safe Mode?

Do you have a Windows boot disk ..to run chkdsk/scandisk?

If not(And getting the same message), is the unit still under warranty?

You could try doing a system restore

or if you have the XP CD you could use the XP Recovery Console

    Hope this helps

to be honest people this is a rather old 1.2gh system that has seen many an upgrade, extra ram, graphics cards, sound cards over the course of 3 to 4 yrs,..
I have been long fingering a replacement for awhile now..:o an unwise move I now know.
If I could nurse it into a full boot just to backup some important files that would do me,..I'll try your suggestions
    Thanks

could use xp cd to go into recovery console and use fixmbr command

    or
just get new computer and add hard disk as d: drive and pull information off that way
