I'm moving soon from suburbia up-country ... our dog, when let off the lead bug-gers off and doesn't come back for at least a day ! So we keep her on one of them long - long - long leads when not being walked, but its not realy fair (lead is 25 metres). I'd like to let her off the lead permanently but up-country I'm bothere she'll annoy the sheep & cows, get shot & get me lumped with a bill for 1 tonne of beef or something.

    Any help appreciated !

    Fatboy.

What about one of those electronic dog fences where you bury a cable about an inch underground and there's a sensor you put on the dogs collar which beeps at him when he gets close. He'll get a little shock or 2 until he realises what it's for but afaik it's approved by the ISPCA as being humane. I'm sure you'd get one in any good pet shop

Is she neutered? If not, get her done. Neutering cuts down on the desire to wander.

:( House site is too open for one of those boundary devices to work (thanks for the offering tho)

Yep, she's neutered (not tho youd notice !!!), just an incredibly nutty dog and as dumb as they come, got knocked down the other day, simply bolted out of the gate, straight into a car, got up, shook herself down and ran off !!

Try a dog training class..or two this will help with recall. Invest in a Cill Dara run or fence or a portion of the garden.
Remember dogs don't know any better and it's up to owners to take full responsibility for them. You know in advance that your dog will bolt or wander so you have the time to do something before the dog gets hurt ..again or causes an accident.

The elec. collar fencing system can be done in an open space that's the idea of them.

A double door system to a dog run will also prevent escape. Dog training will help the bond between owner and dog so the dog will prefer to stick with you rather than bolt off.

Your supposed to keep a dog on a lead in public places, and not let a dog wander on their own.

Ahhh... I wasn't going to respond to this but here goes:

Point 1. I know in advance my dog will wander... YES.. thats why I was trying to put a lead on her when she bolted !!!!!!!

Point 2. A double door system pen is the Absolute kind of thing I'm trying to avoid ! Chaining up, or penning in is not a long term solution.

Point 3. Keeping a dog on a lead in public places... eeerrrr, really ??? I thought they were allowed to run free all over the place !!! The point of this thread is for the house, not a public place and I'm very well aware of my responsibilities in this regard.

I want my dog to want to stay around, that was the point of my request. I did'nt however bank on the side-effect of being treated like naughty dog myself in the process !
    :(

She was only tryin to help, I thought you meant the dog runs off when you bring her for a walk as well.

I know that, just find the condescending tone rather irritating.

We had a bit of a prob with our lady also- Used to open the front door herself and run off and would never come back until ready - I had enough of the constatnt chasing around the green and decided to do something about it. I went out and bought a dog whistle and a couple of pounds of liver. When I got home i would toot the whistle and give her a bit of liver. Then I would toot the whistle while she was in a different room and she would come running in and again she'd get some liver. I got to the point that even when I was playing with her I would throw the ball for her and when she was half way there I'd blow the whistle and lo and behold she would nearly break her neck trying to get back quick enough to get the treat. It works a treat now (except in the park when there's a football match on! That ref's whistle confuses the sh** out of her:D )
As for when you're not there I reckon you will have to set up some kind of a run or fencing to keep her in. What about keeping her in the house with you? Is that not an option? - either way sounds like you are going to have your hands full - good luck!

Basic obedience training is the place to start.

Maybe try a dog whistle, the pitch is different so she might be able to distinguish between that and the ref's whistle better. :v:
