just wondering if tax has to be paid on stuff bought on ebay..
i am looking for a few bits and bobs, but it seems the cheapest places are America and Hong Kong e.t.c.,
only i don't want to get stung by our friends in customs and excise, if it works out cheaper to source the items in the E.U.

    anyone ever get caught out?

I've bought loads of stuff from the states on ebay and I never had any problems. I bought some CD's from Amazon in the states and had to pay the b*****ds though.

Rule of thumb is that they can tax you anything over 45 Euros.....

Sometimes it will pass, sometimes it wont. There's no distinct pattern.

A long time ago I got stung by customs for tax on a memory card for the first ever Diamond Rio. Had to pay them or they wouldn't release the card.

You can ask the seller to mark the box as having a value of nil, less than E45 or mark the box as having "faulty merchandise" which is being sent to you for repair. Any of those will have your package sail through!

    Yep! What jerryadams said!!

I learned from my mistakes! I bought a crap load of stuff from ebay and payed a fortune to Mr. Postman at the door too on tax untill i discovered the whole under €45 thing! and the marking the package as a gift!

Duhhhh:rolleyes: Took me long enough to realise it too!! hehe

Customs can still do a random inspection and they will decide if it's worth €45, it's a gift or faulty merchandise. There's always a risk. Plus if you state that a €500 camera is worth €45 then that's all it will be insured for when in transit.

oh right sorry bout the wrong forum...

anyways i'm of the understanding, that customs will slap tax on anything over 45 yoyos, even if said item is second hand..? (miserable hoors)

whats the story with getting the package marked as a gift, value of less than E45 if a fella was buying from ebay shops.... are they more likely to mark true value of item ..?
