I just started using bit torrent, and I am getting really really slow speeds. I use UTV for my DSL connection, and Azureus for torrents.

It really is rubbish - downloading at 1.9kB at the moment from 5 seeds.

I've heard various things about portforwarding but it never works. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm using a zyxel 645 ethernet modem.

i dont think there's much you can do about it.....all depends on the upload speed of the seeders and what segments of the file they are seeding

I think I might be forwarding the ports incorrectly, or may need a static ip address? Can anyone help?

Set the port for azuerus to 30000 or something.
The static ip should be the ip of your machine. If you have your Mac set to DHCP it might stay the same all the time but then again, it might renew depending on the lease time.

sounds like you might need to switch off the firewall in your Mac. Why would you need to port forward? Maybe you need to poke a hole in your router.

Just a quick question about using Azureus... I was downloading an eh.. particularly large linux distro.. yeah.... about 9 Gb in size.... when I had a bit of unrelated trouble with OS X and had to reinstall the OS. Now I have about 96% of the files downloaded, but it no longer shows up when I launch Azureus. Is there any way for me to resume where I left off?

Open the torrent again in Azureus,
save to the same place as the first time,
    Azureus will check whats downloaded.
Checking time varies from pc to pc and 9GB may take a few minutes.
You'll see the status 'checking' and the done % tells you how much its checked.
    Then it continues downloading.

Ah grand... just wasn't sure if it would wipe it all and start from the beginning... it had taken over a week to get it to 96% and I was close to tears.. ha..

I may back up what I have so far anyway... just in case.

    Thanks.

i'm a great fan of devices auto configuring!

at home I have the zyxel modem as supplied with esatbt. I have uPnP switched on in that and in azureus on my mac I have uPnP switched on also. The firewall on the mac is off (cause it's being NATed by the zyxel anyway - who cares), and it means that i can DHCP whatever way I want.
