Somebody i know is having trouble connecting to the internet.....
here is a what happened - sorry for the length

I tried upgrading my pc last week from 768mb DDR 400mhz
    to 1gb DDR 400mhz

This failed quite catastrophically as both my hard drives went down and the BIOS seemed to lose all concept of what a hard drive looked like.
Oh how I laughed when this happened....

Anyway, so worked away on it for 3 hrs or so and formatted my second drive.
I noticed while I was trying to get it started that it didn't recognise the ram I had in there prior to the upgrade which I thought was odd.
Got xp up and running which I felt a little happier about as you can imagine.
But it still didn't like the other DDR (the 768mb I had in there prior)

So, fiddled around again on thursday and got the second HDD up and running with the extra DDR finally as well, so things are starting to look a little rosier.
It would seem that because I was using 2 different types of 256mb DDR that is was causing some sort of conflict. Anyway, I resolved this by putting 2 identical 256mb DDR in along side the 512 and it now works fine.......fingers crossed....

I spoke with my ISP and they sent round an engineer to take a look. He replaced my set top box and thought that this may work combined with a resending of the signal. My ISP thinks the signal is there but is not being understood by the PC.

i suggested that he try "ipconfig/renew" but i'm out of my depth here, so i have no idea if it will work.

    any other suggestions??

What does it say when your trying to connect?
Is it wireless broadband or phone line?
As always check all the cables!

Make sure your pc isnt assigning itself an IP address.
