    Hi All

Ok i'm a n00b to the xbox modding and was wondering what will i actually need to soft mod my xbox. it is a version 1.6 pal and with kernal version of 5838.01. from all the tutorials that i have read about modding this version it appears that i have to switch the region to USA(ntsc). how will this affect me if i want to play PAL games or will all the games from now on have to be NTSC. is there anyway of softmodding without having to chanmge the region to NTSC?

I picked up a box recently (1.6 I assume) and soft-mod'ed with Krayzie's Ndure Installer (Splinter Cell savegame). The only thing that matters is the MS dashboard version (5960). It's kernel independent. I've moded both v1 and v1.6 boxes with it.

what he said. There's still lots of info about previous limitations with softmodding that have been resolved now so go get ndure [edit]or get UXE...see below[/edit]

    Hi guy's

After doing a bit of reading up on the ndure exploit and it appears it will only work with dashboard version 5960 and mine is version 5659. trouble is i dont have access to xbox live to update to the version required by ndure is there any other way i can update the dash to the one required

Softmod exploits are dashboard version independent and have been for ages.

Then the readme for the ndure exploit from xbins must be out of date so as it says

no it's not, I have to apologise as I know that krayzie's UXE exploit works on every Live! updated box (dash 4920 and higher) but Ndure requires you to update your dash to 5960 (which is on all new xboxes).
All the so-called softmod exploits do is provide a method to either boot a new BIOS (using the now redundant phoenix bios loader or similar) or to boot Nkpatcher which modifies the normal bios in memory (more features than just replacing the whole BIOS in memory and faster at booting).

So Krayzie's Ndure package uses the Ndure exploit to boot nkpatcher and krayzie's UXE installer boots nkpatcher via the universal UXE exploit which works on all LIVE! enabled dashboards for both PAL and NTSC. Basically you get the same mod with a slightly different method of execution.

UXE is just as good and it works on everything (I know). I hadnt read much about Ndure as I had no need so sorry for misleading everyone, I just assumed it was the next generation of softmod but it looks like it has limitations. You could of course rent a new Live enabled game and let it upgrade your dash to 5960 and then you can install nDure if you want. Upgrading the dash is done by entering the live section of the game and try to create a new profile (you may have to plug an ethernet cable between the xbox and a pc just to fool the xbox into thinking it has net access)

let us know how you get on

I assumed krazies was just a UXE based installer

I know, it's hard to keep track of all these damn exploits. I did my first mod when there were no installers, just manual patching of files for different kernels and dashboards. It took me about a month to research it because of all the out of date and conflicting info.

I think I'll stick to krayzie's UXE from now on. btw Krayzie is just a guy on xbox-scene forums that packaged these exploits into handy installers. Somebody else coded the exploits.

I hate bold text but here goes:
The most important bit of advice with any softmod is to backup the eeprom via ftp to your PC before going to the install section of the installer. Once you do that you can recover from any problems you may have (however unlikely)

ok cool ill give the update of the dashboard a try later and see how that goes and then will have a look at using UXE or Ndure
