my friend just bought a 92 jap import Civic Ferio (saloon).
Its a 1.5(i checked the tax disc) . on the boot lid it says 'VTI' and on the engine it says 'V-TECH' ...thats whats confusing me

he told me that a vti is faster than a v-tec and he says his is the vti model.
As far as i knew though the civics come in 1.5 LSI (not VTI) and only 1.6 engines come in VTI.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

The Japanese VTi is the equivalent of a European ESi - 1.5 SOHC Vtec - 128BHP or so (ESI is 1.6 SOHC Vtec)

The 'real' VTi if you can call it that is called the SiR in Japan - 1.6 DOHC VTec (160BHP or so depending on who you believe) and that was called the VTi in Europe...which leads to confusion obviously enough

    Kdevitt's spot on,Its the 1.5 SOHC VTEC,The lsi is 1.5SOHC non-vtec

If it was an irish Vti it'd be the 1.6 B16 engine

Believe no one. Just look up the engine model number.

Theres a whole range of VTEC engines. So it depends WHICH VTI and WHICH VTEC you are talking about. There's shed loads of them.

Oh and forget the tax disk. Alot of these are registered incorrectly. You see ads from time to time advertising a 1.6 as being taxed/registered as a 1.5 to get lower insurance.

For his year civic and considering its an import there's only 1 sohc vtec engine so if it has a vti sticker on the back and vtec on the rocker cover then its a D15b,you'l only confuse yourself looking over american sites at engine codes

Exactly - there was eventually a jap spec 1.6 SOHC Vtec , but not in 92 -

Jap specs are here : http://www.jspeed.net/techspecsj.asp

I find this site good for looking up this kind of stuff - not sure how reliable it is, but it's right in this case:
