    Hey all.

Im in 1st year arts doing history and politics as my majors. I made the wrong choice because politics is totally ****! It was nothing like I thought it would be.

Do any of you know if its possible to change majors from politics to english? (they were both in the same box in the options at the start of the year)

    cheers

I think you left things far too late. You would have to talk to one of the Student Advisors about it like Moss Garde. You've lost out on the first semester of English though and I'd say you would have to get permission from the head of the English department to switch. I doubt he would be in favour of you doing that but you could always try.

Why did you leave it so late though if you felt politics was sh*t? You could have easily moved in the first couple of weeks.

Hope everything works out for you though. I switched from economics to history in first year in around October (or maybe it was November) but I've never heard of anyone leaving it this late!

iv done bugger all work in politics cos its so boring, and a mate of mine does english so i could get the notes off him.

Judging by the amount of people i see literally falling asleep in lectures, it seems alot of people hate it

I'm 2nd year politics. I disliked some of the stuff in 1st year like the stuff on Aristotle, Marx but whereas they are gone in 2nd year, you have to do stuff on epistemology and other boring topics.

If you really want out of politics then talk to your student adviser. I talked to Moss Garde, one of the 1st year advisers, and he was sound enough and detailed what I had to do.

Don't you have exams though? I didn't have to worry about that last year so your situation is far more complex.

    Never liked that guy either.

I asked if I could change my degree from Science to Theoretical Physics about 2 weeks ago, and they said it was fine, but I assume it was because the modules I'm doing in Science are the same ones I would have done in TP.

    No harm in asking though.

Oh and they charge €30. Grrrrrrrr.

ehm ...well my flatmate wasnt allowed change from pol back in october and she ended up dropping out!!
no harm in asking but i'd say its too late!

it might be possible to change to two elective modules...but that depends on how many electives you already took in sem1... i dunno

i did 2 electives in my 1st semester so i wouldnt have to do one in my 2nd. its possible. you just have to be committed to getting more work done.

JD-thats not what i meant but I get what ur sayin...

Vic does this help you at all? depends on what other subjs and modules you chose but ya might actually be able to work it and drop politics.
For arts you have three options
1] 3 major subjects consisting of 4modules each subj. the traditional way
2] 2 majors consisting of 4 modules ech, 2 minors [consisting of 2 modules ech]
3] 2majors, 1minor and two free electives modules

each module is worth 4credits and you have to add up to 60.

they were both in the same box in the options at the start of the year
this doesnt mean anything AFAIK, just means they in the same grouping!!

Too late i reckon. I changed courses last year on the last day of deadlines, which is the last friday before halloween. I was changing my course code even though I was staying within the Arts framework. My friend also asked about making the same change (he's in 1st year) and they told him it was too late and to go ask the CAO about it.

Odds are it'd be too late by now to switch. Half the year is over. Though with modurlaisation, there should be more freedom than previous years.

One of my friends changed from general science to theoretical physics at the end of first year. He had been doing all the TP subjects anyway, so it was OK.

    That's exactly what I'm doing. :)
